Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a quiet, less-traveled route in the Himalayas, perfect if you want to avoid the crowds in Everest or Annapurna. It encircles Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the world’s 8th-highest peak, located in Gorkha, NepalOn this adventure, you can witness breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu, Himlung Himal, and Cheo Himal. As a trek starter, you take a drive to Machha Khola. From there, you enter the restricted Manaslu region, and the trail follows the Budi Gandaki Valley, with scenery changing constantly.

First, you witness river valleys and terraced fields, but soon it changes into dense forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and high-mountain deserts. Along the way, you’ll pass through traditional villages such as Jagat, Deng, Lho, Samagaon, Samdo, and Dharamsala. These are home to Gurung and Tibetan communities, where prayer flags, monasteries, and Buddhist influence are prevalent. You can experience local life, visit monasteries, and enjoy the culture and hospitality of the people who’ve lived in these remote areas for a long period of time.

The trek route reaches its highest point at Larkya La Pass (5,106m) and then descends to Dharapani, from where you connect with the Annapurna Circuit. This pass makes the Manaslu Circuit challenging, not suitable for absolute beginners. In addition, the rugged terrain and remote setting of the trek create more challenges. For that, hiring a licensed guide is helpful for trail navigation and ensuring your safety.

Day 1: Drive to Machhikhola from Kathmandu

Today marks the start of our 12-day journey. We will have an early breakfast before setting out on a beautiful drive toward Machha Khola. Our route follows the Prithvi Highway that winds along the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers.

Along the drive, we will witness lush valleys, rolling hills, and distant mountain peaks. After a few hours, we will reach Dhading Besi. From here, the road starts to get a bit rough. We move onto rocky trails along the northwest route opposite the Budhi Gandaki River.

As we continue, we will pass through Soti Khola, a popular starting point for treks in the Manaslu region. Then, after crossing through several Gurung and Magar villages, we get our first glimpses of local culture and life in the hills. We will finally reach Machha Khola by late afternoon, where we will settle in for the first night of the Manaslu Circuit Trek journey.

Day 2: Machhikhola to Jagat

We will begin our day by going to the police checkpoint in Machha Khola to have our permits checked. After that, we will follow the trail along a deep river gorge, hiking up and down rugged paths with some steep climbs. Soon, we will reach Tatopani. We can relax here and take a dip for relaxation.

After a short rest, we will continue toward Yuri Bagar, which has beautiful views of Ganesh Himal and Shringi Himal. Along the way, we will pass a suspension bridge and go through villages where Gurung and Magar communities live. Here, we can watch locals go about their daily lives on small farms and in simple teahouses along the river.

As we move on, we will come to the 158-meter cantilever bridge in Yaru Bagar, which happens to be Nepal’s first cantilever bridge. This will take us about 20 minutes to cross. After crossing, we will keep hiking until we reach Jagat, a Tibetan village. It is a stone-paved town and the entry checkpoint for the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Day 5: Namrong to Samagaun

On Day 5, we will leave Namrung and begin our journey to Samagaun, enjoying stunning mountain views as the valley unfolds before us. The path climbs higher, with the lush forests of the lower valley giving way to the more barren, rocky landscape of the Himalayas.

As we approach Lho, we will be greeted by breathtaking views of Manaslu, with the peaceful Rebung Gompa monastery nestled close to the mountain. In the gompa, we can see monks, prayer flags, and traditional stone houses that reflect the strong Tibetan culture of the valley. After exploring it for a while, we continue our trek toward Shyala and have lunch.

After lunch, we will cross the drainage slopes of the Pungen Glacier and eventually arrive at the flat terrain of Samagaun. It is a charming village with lovely courtyards and pastures on both sides. During the Manaslu climbing season, Samagaun is a busy hub as it is the closest settlement to the Manaslu Base Camp. We will see caravans of yaks and porters moving through here.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day at Samagaun

Day 6 in Samagaun is dedicated to acclimatization. It allows our bodies to acclimate to increasing altitude, so we can safely move to higher elevations over the coming days. We can enjoy stunning views of Mt. Manaslu and explore the famous Ribung Gompa. We will also see panoramic sights of glaciers, farmland, and the village’s flat terrain.

There are a few options for day hikes near Samagaun. We can visit Birendra Taal, a beautiful glacial lake located 3 km from the village at 3,450m. If you’re feeling up for a longer hike, you can visit the Manaslu Base Camp, which lies 3 km further away from Birendra Taal. The base camp offers views of the Manaslu Glacier and the icefall.

For more mountain views, we can also visit the Pungen Monastery, 6-7 km from the village. Here, we will encounter panoramic views of the peaks and thousands of mani stones engraved. These are all “climb high, sleep low” side trips, designed to help your body adapt and reduce the risk of altitude sickness before you cross the high Larkya La Pass. As a simple alternative, we can also explore the village and observe the traditional lifestyle of local families.

Day 7: Samagaun to Samdo

Today’s trek will be challenging as we follow a northern path along the upper Budhi Gandaki River. The trail gradually ascends, and we will pass the confluence of the Larkya River and the river from the Samdo Glacier.

As we walk through the Kermo Kharka forests, the path becomes steeper and more rugged. We will cross several wooden bridges, and the climb can be tough. However, the scenery is beautiful and that makes it worthwhile. Our lunch stop will be at a scenic point along the trail, where we can rest before continuing the steep ascent toward Samdo.

After lunch, we will continue the climb. As we approach the village, we will spot a large white Kani marking our destination. The final part of the day’s trek will be a bit strenuous as we reach Samdo, a remote high-altitude settlement close to the Tibetan border. Here, we can meet and talk with local people who still rely on yak herding and seasonal trade.

The trail passes through Mani walls, stone houses, and a bridge toward Larkya Bazaar, a small settlement with some lodging options. We then continue to Dharamshala (also known as Larkya Phedi), the highest point before the Larkya Pass.

You can witness lichened stones, grazing pastures, and beautiful trees from this village. Also, the Syancha Glacier is visible at this point, making the journey rewarding before you ascend to Larkhya La Pass. This day is shorter, giving you extra time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for tomorrow’s long, demanding pass day.

Once at the top, we can enjoy panoramic views of the majestic Himalayas, like Mt. Annapurna II, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Himlung Himal. After taking in the views, we will cross the pass. Then, we will descend steeply along the high moraine ridge of the Salpudanda Glacier.

From here, we will make our way down to the grassy moraine of Dangboche Kharka. The trail becomes easier as we continue our descent. After about six hours, we will pass through a large meadow and a Mani Wall, finally reaching the beautiful village of Bhimtang. You will get simple yet cozy setup rooms. You will find basic amenities like a room with two beds, each furnished with blankets, pillows, and often a small table for your belongings. These rooms provide just enough warmth and comfort, though bringing your own sleeping bag during colder months is often necessary, as blankets may be limited.

tea house in MCT

Also, lodges offer a communal dining area to gather, enjoy meals, and socialize. Meals are usually hearty, with options like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodle soup, pasta, and pancakes, providing the energy needed for the trek. Hot drinks such as tea and coffee are also available, which are especially appreciated after a day in the chilly mountain air. Amenities may include basic washing facilities, but hot showers often come with an additional charge. Wi-Fi and charging services might be available in some lodges, but usually for an extra fee.

Food Options during Manaslu Circuit trek

While staying in Kathmandu, you have the flexibility to try a variety of foods as only breakfast (and welcome or farewell dinner) is provided. You can choose any restaurant or dish that appeals to you for other meals. Once on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, however, all three daily meals are included, giving you plenty of energy for the journey. Stay Connected: Wi-Fi & Mobile Data During Manaslu Circuit Trek

Wi-Fi and mobile data availability on the Manaslu Circuit Trek are limited but improving. Wi-Fi is available in some teahouses in larger villages like Samagaun and Namrung. However, it is often slow and unreliable due to remote mountain conditions. Teahouses usually charge a small fee for access, and the quality can vary with altitude and weather. Lower areas generally have better connectivity, but you may face no connection in higher, remote regions.

Mobile data is more reliable than Wi-Fi, but it depends on your provider. Ncell and Nepal Telecom offer SIM cards with data packages that work in some parts of the trek. Their coverage may be decent in lower villages, but it is inconsistent at higher elevations and along isolated trails. For reliable communication, you may want to rent a satellite phone or use apps that work offline for navigation and trekking information.

Altitude Sickness During Manaslu Trek

Altitude sickness is a common concern on the Manaslu Trek, especially as you ascend above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Some of the symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. You can develop it when your body struggles to adapt to lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes. The risk increases as you approach higher passes, like the Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters/16,752 feet). To make your trek enjoyable and memorable, it is important for you to have a proper acclimatization day on your itinerary.

Ways To Prevent It

  • Allow time for your body to adjust, ideally no more than 500 meters (1,640 feet) of elevation gain per day above 3,000 meters. Schedule rest days, especially in villages like Samagaun.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body adapt to altitude. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can lead to dehydration.
  • A balanced diet with carbohydrates provides energy, and a warm sleeping environment helps your body conserve energy at night.
  • Some trekkers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent symptoms of altitude sickness. Consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
  • If you experience symptoms, descend to a lower altitude and rest. Avoid pushing through severe symptoms, as ignoring them can worsen altitude sickness.

Preparing Yourself For Manaslu Circuit Trek

To be ready for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you need both physical and mental preparation. Physically, focus on building endurance, strength, and stamina through activities like hiking, jogging, or cycling to boost cardiovascular fitness. Strengthen your legs, core, and upper body with exercises such as squats and weight training. Aim for 2-3 months of consistent training. This will gradually increase your resilience to handle the high altitude and rugged terrain.

Mental preparation is just as important. Facing long days in the remote terrain with discomfort and changing weather is not easy. Hence, prepare yourself mentally to stay positive and adaptable. You can visualize milestones along the trek to build resilience. Focus on small daily goals to stay motivated and energized through tougher sections.

In this way, a combination of physical and mental readiness ensures a safer, more enjoyable trek.

When should you trek to Manaslu Circuit

The best time to trek to Manaslu Trek is during the Spring and Autumn seasons. Besides these two seasons, we generally do not recommend you trek in monsoon and winter seasons unless you are well prepared and have some prior experience. Here is a breakdown of each 4 seasons of the Manaslu Region.

manaslu trek best time

Spring
March to May

Spring is considered to be the best season for Manaslu Circuit. It offers you pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and stunning mountain views. It’s a season when you witness blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, adding vibrant color to landscapes.

Temperatures are generally mild, and while the region can be busy with trekkers, the favorable weather and breathtaking landscapes make it a popular choice for many. However, during the peak season, the trails are crowded, and finding the right accommodation can be quite challenging.

Autumn
September to November

Another popular and ideal season for you to trek is Autumn. During this season, you will get crisp air, clear blue skies, and stable weather conditions. The monsoon rains have just ended, leaving the environment fresh and vibrant, with lush green vegetation and spectacular mountain views.

This season is especially favored by trekkers for its excellent visibility and moderate temperatures, which are comfortable during the day and only slightly chilly at night. During this season, you will also have the perfect chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions of the Nepali people.

Monsoon
June to August

Monsoon brings heavy rainfall, making trails muddy, slippery, and difficult to navigate. Also, it increases the risk of landslides, particularly at higher elevations. Similarly, leeches are also in huge numbers, that are increasing challenges for you.

Clouds and mist often obscure mountain views, so this season is generally less recommended unless you are well-prepared for the condition. If you want some unique and thrilling adventure and have some prior trekking experience, you can definitely try this season.

Winter
December to February

Winter means cold, freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, especially at higher altitudes. The snowfall can block trails and passes, including the Larkya La Pass. Although the skies are often clear, the cold can be intense, especially above 3,000 meters.

This season is suitable only for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with extreme conditions and equipped for snow and ice. If you want to experience the snow-covered landscapes, the Manaslu Circuit Trek in winter can be rewarding, if you hire a guide with you.

Manaslu Circuit Trek vs Annapurna Circuit Trek

Both the Manaslu Circuit Trek and the Annapurna Circuit Trek are incredible Himalayan adventures. Being a restricted region, Manaslu is more remote, quieter, and Tibetan-influenced, with fewer trekkers and simpler teahouses. In contrast, Annapurna is more developed, easier to access, and also culturally diverse, with Gurung, Thakali, and Manangi communities along the way.

They also differ in cost and logistics. Manaslu is more expensive as it requires restricted-area permits and a licensed guide, whereas Annapurna generally allows independent trekking with standard permits.

Feature Manaslu Circuit Trek Annapurna Circuit Trek
Accessibility Harder to reach, fewer transport options Easier access via Pokhara or Kathmandu
Crowds Less crowded, remote More trekkers, popular trail
Culture Tibetan-influenced villages and monasteries Gurung, Thakali, and Manangi communities
Accommodation Basic teahouses along the trail Better infrastructure, more teahouse options
Scenery Alpine meadows, glaciers, high passes Diverse landscapes, subtropical to high mountains
Permits Restricted Area Permit (RAP) + MCAP + ACAP ACAP + TIMS card, independent trekking allowed
Cost Higher due to mandatory guide and permits Lower because independent trekking is possible

Why You Need a Restricted Area Permit for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

You need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the Manaslu trek because the whole region is officially restricted. The permit limits visitor numbers to help protect forests, wildlife, and sensitive areas such as Bimthang and Larkya Glacier. It also helps preserve local culture by keeping monasteries such as Lho Gompa and Samagaon Monastery, and villages such as Jagat, Lho, and Samagaon, safe from damage and overcrowding.

Additionally, the RAP improves safety and rescue coordination. Because trekkers must trek this region with a licensed guide and at least one other person, authorities know who is on the trail and can respond more easily if any problems arise. Overall, the permit helps protect the environment and culture while allowing trekkers to enjoy the Manaslu Circuit safely.

Myself and Caroline had Simbir as a porter/guide several years ago when he worked for a family company. We had several weeks doing the Manaslu circuit + Tsum valley. It was a very enjoyable trip, and Simbir was professional and fun, he sorted out the transport, accomodation and carried some of our gear. We have kept in touch over the years, and seen him grow and now with his own company. We would certainly reccommend him and his company.

Best time ever on the Manaslu Circuit

Had the absolute best time ever doing the Manaslu Circuit Trek with Simbir at Action Nepal Treks! He was so helpful and understanding when we were deciding which trek to book, explaining all our options. When we arrived at the airport he was there to pick us up, dropped us off at our hostel, and took us out to dinner! He even assisted us in getting any extra gear in town that we needed. All the transportation to the trek was included and was quite an adventure itself. Exploring the Manaslu region with Simbir and our porter Kanxa Dai was so much fun. Every day was a new adventure and each area we got to explore were so beautiful. We played cards, ate lots of Dal Bhat (and snickers), and trampled around in the snow. Simbir and Kanxa Dai were the best duo I could ask for to go on a trek with, they were aware of any risks, but never worried us and made it a silly time. We also got to learn so much about Nepal through them, its culture, history, and development. We already want to come back and do another trek with Action Nepal Treks. If you get the chance to come to Nepal, do the Manaslu Circuit with them it will be the most amazing trip!!!!

Manaslu Trek with Simbir and Action Nepal Treks

Simbir and Action Nepal Treks were amazing! We did the Manaslu circuit this November and had the best time. It began with Simbir picking us up from the airport. He was so friendly and easy to communicate with right of the bat. He made sure before we left we had all the right equipment, as it had just snowed and we now needed crampons. You can tell Simbir is very competent and experienced as a guide. The next day, we met up with Kanxa Dai, our porter, who was immediately so nice and such a warm person to be around. When we began the trek, Simbir always made sure we had enough food and stopped for snacks/drinks. After the storms the trail had washed out in places and with Simbir’s guidance we never felt unsafe at any point. Throughout the trek we learned so much about Nepalese culture from Simbir and Kanxa Dai. But not only that it, felt like we were hiking with friends. Overall, it was such a memorable experience and we already want to come back and trek with Simbir and Kanxa Dai again. I would highly recommend Action Nepal Treks to anyone looking for a guiding company!
