Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

The 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek encircles the Majestic Mount Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. It has recently gained popularity among trekkers in the Gorkha District of Nepal. Most people nowadays trek here because of its quiet trail and remoteness compared to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit Trek. Starting from a lower elevation, the trial reached a maximum of 5,000 meters.

Along the way, you will make your way through diverse landscapes and traditional Nepali villages. The highest elevation you will reach is Larkhya La Pass, which is 5,106 meters. With this adventure, you can witness the breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu along with Himlung Himal and Cheo Himal. Besides that, the trek also offers you a chance to immerse yourself in unique Tibetan and Gurung culture.

However, this adventure can be quite challenging if you are not prepared well and do not have proper planning. For increased safety, you can also hire a guide. Want more information about this trek? Here is everything about the Manaslu Circuit Trek, its itinerary, and other important information.

What Do Lodges/teahouses Offer You With?

If you are trekking towards the Manaslu Circuit Trek, lodges are the most common means of accommodation you get. They offer you basic amenities such as food and shelter. You will get simple yet cozy setup rooms. You will find basic amenities like a room with two beds, each furnished with blankets, pillows, and often a small table for your belongings. These rooms provide just enough warmth and comfort, though bringing your own sleeping bag during colder months is often necessary, as blankets may be limited.

Also, lodges offer a communal dining area to gather, enjoy meals, and socialize. Meals are usually hearty, with options like dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodle soup, pasta, and pancakes, providing the energy needed for the trek. Hot drinks such as tea and coffee are also available, which are especially appreciated after a day in the chilly mountain air. Amenities may include basic washing facilities, but hot showers often come with an additional charge. Wi-Fi and charging services might be available in some lodges, but usually for an extra fee.

Dining Variety During The Journey

While staying in Kathmandu, you have the flexibility to try a variety of foods as only breakfast (and welcome or farewell dinner) is provided. You can choose any restaurant or dish that appeals to you for other meals. Once on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, however, all three daily meals are included, giving you plenty of energy for the journey. Please note that the final dinner in Kathmandu is not covered in the trek package.

During the trek, you can expect a selection of breakfast options, lunch dishes, and satisfying dinners. Here is a look at some typical choices:

Meals Options
Breakfast Oats, Pancakes, Honey, Bread, Eggs (boiled, scrambled, omelets), Muesli, Toast, Hot drinks (tea, coffee), Porridge (apple, oatmeal, honey), Tibetan bread, Cornflakes with hot milk
Lunch Dal Bhat (rice and lentils), Fried noodles (veg or egg), Chowmein, Tenthuk (Tibetan noodle soup), Thukpa (noodle soup), Pasta (macaroni, cheese), Sandwiches (grilled tomato or cheese), Momos (chicken or cheese dumplings), Pizza (veg, chicken, mushroom), Fried potatoes (finger chips, boiled)
Dinner Dal Bhat (with unlimited refills), Fried rice, Chow mein, Thukpa, Pasta (various styles), Momos, Pizza, Soup (mixed, vegetable, garlic), Salad, Meat or curry

Stay Connected: Wi-Fi & Mobile Data

Wi-Fi and mobile data availability on the Manaslu Circuit Trek are limited but improving. Wi-Fi is available in some teahouses in larger villages like Samagaun and Namrung. However, it is often slow and unreliable due to remote mountain conditions. Teahouses usually charge a small fee for access, and the quality can vary with altitude and weather. Lower areas generally have better connectivity, but you may face no connection in higher, remote regions.

Mobile data is more reliable than Wi-Fi, but it depends on your provider. Ncell and Nepal Telecom offer SIM cards with data packages that work in some parts of the trek. Their coverage may be decent in lower villages, but it is inconsistent at higher elevations and along isolated trails. For reliable communication, you may want to rent a satellite phone or use apps that work offline for navigation and trekking information.

Altitude Sickness During Manaslu Trek

Altitude sickness is a common concern on the Manaslu Trek, especially as you ascend above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Some of the symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. You can develop it when your body struggles to adapt to lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes. The risk increases as you approach higher passes, like the Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters/16,752 feet). To make your trek enjoyable and memorable, it is important for you to have a proper acclimatization day on your itinerary.

Ways To Prevent It

  • Allow time for your body to adjust, ideally no more than 500 meters (1,640 feet) of elevation gain per day above 3,000 meters. Schedule rest days, especially in villages like Samagaun.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body adapt to altitude. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can lead to dehydration.
  • A balanced diet with carbohydrates provides energy, and a warm sleeping environment helps your body conserve energy at night.
  • Some trekkers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent symptoms of altitude sickness. Consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
  • If you experience symptoms, descend to a lower altitude and rest. Avoid pushing through severe symptoms, as ignoring them can worsen altitude sickness.

Preparing Yourself For Manaslu Circuit Trek

Physical Preparation

To be physically ready for Manaslu Circuit Trek, you should focus on building endurance, strength, and stamina. For this, you can include regular cardiovascular workouts such as hiking, jogging, or cycling. This helps you boost cardiovascular fitness. Similarly, to strengthen your legs, core, and upper body, go for squats and weightlifting training. You should aim for at least 2-3 months of consistent training. It gradually increases the intensity to make sure you’re prepared for the altitude and tough terrain.

Mental Preparation

Being mentally ready for the challenges you will be facing is also equally important as being mentally prepared. In this journey, you will get some discomfort, long days, and changing weather. You should remind yourself to stay positive and adaptable. Try visualizing each milestone along the trek. This can help build your resilience and keep you motivated during tougher sections. Also, to stay strong and energized, you can focus on small daily goals.

Note

You do not need a TIMS Card for Manaslu Trek.

Best Time for 12 days Manaslu Trek

The best time to trek to Manaslu Trek is during the Spring and Autumn seasons. Besides these two seasons, we generally do not recommend you trek in monsoon and winter seasons unless you are well prepared and have some prior experience. Here is a breakdown of each 4 seasons of the Manaslu Region.

Spring
March to May

Spring is considered to be the best season for Manaslu Circuit. It offers you pleasant temperatures, clear skies, and stunning mountain views. It’s a season when you witness blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers, adding vibrant color to landscapes.

Temperatures are generally mild, and while the region can be busy with trekkers, the favorable weather and breathtaking landscapes make it a popular choice for many. However, during the peak season, the trails are crowded, and finding the right accommodation can be quite challenging.

Autumn
September to November

Another popular and ideal season for you to trek is Autumn. During this season, you will get crisp air, clear blue skies, and stable weather conditions. The monsoon rains have just ended, leaving the environment fresh and vibrant, with lush green vegetation and spectacular mountain views.

This season is especially favored by trekkers for its excellent visibility and moderate temperatures, which are comfortable during the day and only slightly chilly at night. During this season, you will also have the perfect chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions of the Nepali people.

Monsoon
June to August

Monsoon brings heavy rainfall, making trails muddy, slippery, and difficult to navigate. Also, it increases the risk of landslides, particularly at higher elevations. Similarly, leeches are also in huge numbers, that are increasing challenges for you.

Clouds and mist often obscure mountain views, so this season is generally less recommended unless you are well-prepared for the condition. If you want some unique and thrilling adventure and have some prior trekking experience, you can definitely try this season.

Winter
December to February

Winter means cold, freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, especially at higher altitudes. The snowfall can block trails and passes, including the Larkya La Pass. Although the skies are often clear, the cold can be intense, especially above 3,000 meters.

This season is suitable only for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with extreme conditions and equipped for snow and ice. If you want to experience the snow-covered landscapes, then this season is perfect if you hire a guide with you.

Dates & Prices

Our fixed departure dates and per-person pricing make it simple for both solo travelers and small groups to join the adventure. It’s a great chance to meet new people and share the experience with other trekkers. Just choose your preferred date, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Manaslu circuit

Myself and Caroline had Simbir as a porter/guide several years ago when he worked for a family company. We had several weeks doing the Manaslu circuit + Tsum valley. It was a very enjoyable trip, and Simbir was professional and fun, he sorted out the transport, accomodation and carried some of our gear. We have kept in touch over the years, and seen him grow and now with his own company. We would certainly reccommend him and his company.
