Difficulty and Preparation for Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. The high altitude, reaching up to an elevation of 5,143m, and the rugged terrain, with rockfalls, moraines, and landslides, make the trek challenging. Likewise, the unpredictable and harsh weather, the remoteness of the trek route with limited access to medical facilities and resources, and long trekking days with long trekking hours are other factors adding to the difficulty of the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. Additionally, the risk of altitude sickness due to higher elevation is the primary concern while trekking to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

Mindful preparation is necessary for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek due to its challenges. Preparation for Kanchenjunga North Base Camp involves physical training that focuses on strengthening, endurance, and cardiovascular health. Likewise, acclimatization at a higher elevation and gradual ascent are other ways to prepare for a high-altitude trek like Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. In addition, packing appropriately, obtaining travel and medical insurance, consulting your doctor before starting the trip, and being mentally prepared are other ways trekkers can prepare for the trek.

Food and Accommodation in Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

Food and Accommodation are provided at local tea houses during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek, offering a genuine taste of adventure in the Himalayas. The Kanchenjunga region is located in a remote area where modern facilities are scarce; therefore, trekkers should be prepared to adjust to basic lodging and food arrangements. The accommodations at the tea houses involve shared rooms with minimal amenities, including a bed, blankets, and a pillow.

Furthermore, food is served in shared dining rooms, allowing one to interact with fellow trekkers while enjoying meals. The meals consist of local and some continental options, but not Western-style options. A cup of tea, cornflakes, porridge, pancakes, muesli, eggs, and Tibetan bread are common breakfast options along the way to the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek. Likewise, lunch and dinner are much like they are elsewhere in Nepal, with a reliance on Dal Bhat Tarkari (rice, lentils, and vegetable curries). However, options of noodles, momo, Riki Kur (Sherpa potato pancake), fried rice, and Tsampa (roasted and ground barley flour) are also available.

Location and the Highest Point of Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is located in the Kanchenjunga region in eastern Nepal, bordering Sikkim in India. It is located within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area in the Taplejung district of Koshi Province. At an impressive height of 5,143m, the base camp is also known as Pangpema. Additionally, the journey to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp begins at Tapeljung/Suketar and leads to the north face of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.

The highest point of the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek is 5,14m/ 16,874 ft above sea level at the Pangpema (Kanchenjunga North Base Camp), near the base of Mount Kanchenjunga. Reaching the highest point is indeed an amazing experience and a memory for a lifetime. However, getting to the point is not easy and comes with challenges like altitude sickness. Thus, we suggest that trekkers take care of themselves, stay hydrated, consume a balanced diet, walk steadily, and acclimate properly, especially when approaching the highest point.

When should I go for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek as a beginner?

As beginners, trekkers should choose the optimal time when the weather and temperature are pleasant, and risks are minimal. As Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is one of the most challenging treks and is less recommended for beginners, choosing the ideal time of the year is highly recommended. The region faces four distinct seasons; among these, beginners should consider trekking in Spring or April.

Spring (March to May) is a pre-monsoon season characterized by mild weather, rhododendron blossoms, and clear skies, making it ideal for trekking in the North Base Camp of Kanchenjunga. However, occasional rainfall can be an issue while traveling in the season, so checking the weather forecast before starting the trek is advisable. In addition, Autumn (September to November) is a peak trekking time and ideal for beginners. The season follows the monsoon season, characterized by a clean environment, dry and clear weather, and excellent visibility of stunning mountain views.

Mountain Views and other attractions along the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

Although located in a remote area, the journey to the Kanchenjunga view offers a mesmerizing view of the mountains and surrounding scenery. One of the significant highlights and views of the mountain along the trek is the panorama of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m), which is magnificent from the Pangpema viewpoint. Likewise, the view of Mount Jaanu/ Kumbhakarna (7,710m), also known as “Mystery Peak,” appears mind-blowing from Ghunsa and Lhonak. Additionally, the view of Yalung Kang, Tent Peak, and Nepal Peak is jaw-dropping throughout the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek.

Furthermore, the Kanchenjunga and Ramtang glaciers, with their icy rivers and moraines, are other worthy sights along the trek. Tapeljung, a hilly town with terraced fields, is another attraction along the trek to Kanchenjunga. Ghunsa and Lhonak villages, with varied flora and fauna and a rich culture of Limbu and Sherpa, are other attractions along the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.

What are the Necessary permits for the Kanchenjunga Trek?

For each trekking destination within the Kanchenjunga region, trekkers must obtain two permits: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit, including the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek. The permits are mandatory for legally and responsibly entering the region and the protected area. Likewise, these permits are non-negotiable and are essential for respecting the area’s cultural and natural heritage.

The Restricted Area Permit is necessary for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek because the entire Kanchenjunga region is classified as a restricted area to protect natural resources and prevent illegal activities. And, the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit is necessary because the KCAP encompasses the region. Moreover, trekkers can obtain both permits through registered trekking agencies.

The cost of a Restricted Area Permit (RAP):

  • USD 20 per person for the first week.
  • USD 10 per person for each additional week.

The cost of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit:

  • SAARC nationals: NPR 500 (USD 5)
