Lodge to Lodge trekking

EBC Hidden Valley Trek is a unique adventure that takes adventure seekers to the base of the world’s highest peak through the hidden route through the Khumbu Valley of Nepal. Due to being the world’s renowned trekking destination, the classic route to Everest Base Camp is crowded yearly, especially during peak seasons. Thus, the Everest Base Camp hidden valley trek is ideal for trekkers who prefer a quieter environment and wish for fewer fellow travelers en route.

Besides the usual traditional route to Everest Base Camp, the Hidden Valley trek takes trekkers through some of the hidden yet mysterious settlements of the Everest region. The trek takes place within the protected area of Sagarmatha National Park, offering a glimpse of the area’s diverse and rare flora and fauna. Likewise, the trek provides a jaw-dropping vista of snow-capped peaks, including Mt Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, and many unnamed peaks in their surrounding.

The journey to the EBC Hidden Valley begins with the same classic trek, with a flight to Lukla. Then, the trail passes through Phakding and Namche Bazaar, and then the trail differs. While the traditional Everest Base Camp Trek moves towards Tengboche from Namche, the hidden valley trek moves towards Everest View Hotel and makes overnight at Khumjung Valley. The trail continues towards Phortse, Ama Dablam Base Camp, Pheriche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep, and finally, reach Everest Base Camp, the ultimate destination.

Information Regarding EBC Hidden Valley Trekking

Required Permits for EBC Hidden Valley Treks

Obtaining necessary permits before trekking to EBC Hidden Valley is foremost. There are numerous check posts throughout the trekking trail to EBC; checking in from each checkpost showing necessary permits is important to complete the trek. The permits required for the trek are the same as those required for the classic Everest Base Camp Trek.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry (KPLRM) Permit are two mandatory permits for a less crowded EBC trek. As the trek to EBC Hidden Valley takes place within the protected area of Sagarmatha National Park, obtaining a permit for Sagarmatha National Park is crucial.

Likewise, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit is crucial to grant access to the local communities and villages in the Khumbu region. The KPLRM costs NPR 2,000 per person for the first four weeks and NPR 2,500 per person after four weeks. The national park permit costs INR 1500 for SAARC nationals and INR 3000 for foreigners. Yet, Action Nepal Treks takes responsibility for all your paperwork, including all permits.

How Do You Prepare for this EBC Hidden Valley Trek?

EBC hidden valley trek view on the way
EBC hidden valley trail

Indeed, the EBC Hidden Valley trek is an unforgettable journey through the Himalayas of Nepal. However, the journey isn’t without challenges, as it is physically and mentally demanding, requiring proper preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek. Here is how you can prepare for this trek:

Physical Fitness

The foremost aspect trekkers should consider while trekking at Everest Base Camp is being physically fit. This involves cardiovascular training like running, cycling, swimming, and hiking. Try the training at least 3-5 times a week and before 3 months of the trek. Similarly, it involves strength training like squats, lunges, setups, and planks. The training helps handle steep ascents and descents.

Mental Preparedness

Along with preparing for physical fitness, mental preparedness is equally important. Trekking in high altitudes like EBC can be exhausting. Thus, prepare mentally by staying positive and getting ready for any challenges.

Prepare yourself mentally for the trek, which comes with difficulties, unpredictable weather, and situations. Likewise, set realistic goals that you should walk the rugged terrain for many days and 6-7 hours daily. The best way to prepare mentally is by getting involved in yoga.

Learn about Altitude Sickness

The Everest Base Camp hike takes you through an elevation above 5,000m, with a high risk of altitude-related issues. The issues are concern as you move higher and the air becomes thinner. The symptoms of the problem include headache, nausea, and fatigue. Trekkers should ascend slowly, stay hydrated, and acclimatize properly to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

Practice Hiking

One of the best and most effective ways to prepare for the EBC Hidden Valley trek is by getting out hiking. If possible, find some local trails to hike; if not, just walk for an hour daily through your town. Likewise, know where and at what condition your body struggles the most and how far you can push yourself. Once you are familiar with hiking, you will know how your body will react at specific points and how to manage difficulties.

Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization period in EBC Hidden Valley Treks

Altitude sickness is a serious issue that happens when trekkers go to high elevations too quickly, where their oxygen level is lower. The issue becomes a concern as trekkers get above 2,500m. As the higher they hike, the thinner the atmosphere gets, resulting in trouble breathing.

However, altitude sickness refers to three distinct conditions: Acute mountain sickness (AMS), High altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), and High altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The trek to Hidden Valley of EBC takes up to 5555m, where the chances of Altitude sickness are high. Thus, trekkers must include an acclimatization day on their itinerary for a smooth and successful trek.

Acclimatization is crucial and the only way to prevent and minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Acclimatization allows one’s body to adjust gradually to reduce oxygen levels. On the EBC Hidden Valley treks, acclimatization day is scheduled in key locations to help the trekker’s body adapt. Pheriche at 4,371m is the acclimatization point on the trek.

On the day, you’ll hike to Nangkartshanf peak (5,083m), from where trekkers can witness the amazing sights of Ama Dablam, Makalu, and other mountains. After enjoying the view, the trail returns to Pheirche to sleep. Trekkers can improve their adaption safely at high altitudes by spending the acclimatization day.

Best Time for 13 Days Less crowded EBC Trek

everest base camp trail
everest base camp hidden trail

Nepal faces four different seasons, and the entire part of the country faces the same, including the Everest region, where the less crowded EBC trek takes place. Each season has its uniqueness and charm and has pros and cons. However, Spring and Autumn are widely preferred times for the trek to the Less crowded EBC trek. In contrast, the Monsoon and Winter are unfavorable and come with some challenges.

Spring from March to May and Autumn from September to November are peak seasons for trekking in Nepal, including for EBC Hidden Valley Trek. The seasons offer favorable weather with mild and stable weather, providing the ideal trekking experience. Spring is a time of rejuvenation in the Himalayas when the trails are full of rhododendron blossoms.

Similarly, Autumn is known for its crystal-clear skies and incredible visibility. All in all, spring and Autumn are the best times to trek to Everest Base Camp through its Hidden Valley, which offer the perfect balance of comfort, safety, and nature’s majesty.
