Lodge to Lodge (Camping at Base Camp)

Island Peak Climb is one of the most popular trekking peaks within Sagarmatha National Park. In the eastern Himalayas, the Island Peak is in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Located at 6,189m/20,305 ft, it is one of the beginner-friendly climb peaks in the Solukhumbu district. Also known as Imja Tse, it is considered the training peak for some mountaineers, including Tenzing Norgay, before their historic climb.

The Island Peak was unnamed before 1952 AD; in 1953, British Mount Everest expedition members named it (Island Peak) as it seemed like an island in a sea of ice when Dingboche village witnessed it. The mountain was later renamed Imja Tse in 1983, but Island Peak remains popular. Moreover, the Peak is located on the top of the Chukung Glacier between Mount Lhotse and Ama Dablam and extends the southern ridge of Lhotse Shar, separated by a small col.

Climbing to Mera Peak is physically demanding but achievable with good physical fitness and moderate technical climbing knowledge. Throughout the journey, climbers develop mountaineering skills and gain enough climbing skills to overcome the Peak’s difficulty. However, reaching the summit of Island Peak provides a sense of accomplishment, as it provides a panorama of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Lhotse Central, Lhotse Shar, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, and Mt. Makalu.

Itinerary of 14 days Island Peak Climbing

Day 1: Flight from Kathmandu/Manthali to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

Let the adventure begin! Your journey starts with a scenic flight to Lukla from either Kathmandu or Manthali. Due to huge air traffic at peak season, flights from Kathmandu are generally rerouted to Manthali. It takes 5-6 hours to drive from Kathmandu to Manthali. It takes 30 minutes to fly from Lukla from the domestic airport of Kathmandu and 15-20 minutes from Ramechhap’s Manthali Airport to Lukla. Both flights offer stunning aerial views of the Himalayas.

As trekkers land at the Tenzing Hillary Airport of Kathmandu, the trekking journey begins with a hike to Phakding. The trek takes 3-4 hours, passing through small villages, suspension bridges, and rhododendron villages following the trail alongside the Dudh Koshi River. Likewise, the trail offers astonishing views of Kusum Kanguru. Overnight at the tea house of Phakding.

Today, you’ll make one step closer to reaching the Island Peak summit. After having breakfast at Chhukung, a grand adventure towards Island Peak Base Camp begins. The path combines gentle slopes and rocky parts, but the incredible mountain views make every step worth it.

As you ascend higher, the greenery disappears, and the surroundings become barren. The final stretch to the base camp involves walking over rocky ridges and glacial streams. After 6-7 hours of walking from Chhukung, you’ll reach Island Peak Base Camp at an altitude of 5,200m.  It is a small campsite surrounded by a stunning mountain vista. Day 9: Summit Island Peak and return to Chukung

At around midnight, you’ll wake up to the chill of the Himalayan night and begin climbing toward the Summit of the Island Peak. Yet, you’ll start climbing after a quick snack and hot tea and gearing up with crampons, harnesses, ropes, and headlamps. The first part of the climb is a steep and rocky trail leading to High Camp. As dawn seems, you reach the glacier, where the real climbing expedition begins. Using ropes, crampons, and ice axes, you must climb carefully in the section.

The last section of the journey to Island Peak is the most adventurous and thrilling via a steep and narrow ridge. You’ll use fixed ropes for safety, and with all your energy, you’ll step onto the top of Island Peak. By the time you reach the peak, it’s time for sunrise; appeal to your eye with the spectacular sunrise view over the Himalayan Peaks, which seems almost unreal. This is the moment that makes your every challenge worthwhile. Standing at the top of the peak, one feels a real sense of achievement, and the jaw-dropping close-up sight of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Baruntse, and, of course, Island Peak make the moment even more cherishable.

After the successful Island Peak Climb, soak in the beauty of the peak and take photos; it’s time to descend—the journey back to Island Peak Base Camp before reaching Chhukung. By late morning, you’ll stop at the Base Camp, have a meal, and continue descending to Chhukung, your day’s overnight point.

Day ten includes an additional day for climbing to Island Peak in case the scheduled summit attempt is unsuccessful due to unavoidable circumstances, including unfavorable weather conditions. As the Himalayan’s weather is unpredictable, this additional day ensures you have another chance to conquer the height of Island Peak so that your 8-days walk won’t get worthless. However, if the summit day is as successful as planned, you’ll take this day to relax and enjoy the beauty of Chhukung Valley. Whether you climb the peak or roam around the village, you’ll spend the night back in the Chhukung Valley.

Island Peak Climbing Trip Information

Island Peak Climb Difficulty

Climbing is indeed tough, whether it is Island Peak or any other expedition in Nepal. Thus, it is obvious that the trek to Island Peak is not. So, how difficult is the climb? The answer is that it is moderately difficult, graded as 2B or PD in Alpine grading. So, what makes the trek difficult? Here is a brief:

Altitude

The Island Peak stands at an impressive elevation of 6,189m, which is relatively high. The thin air at the elevation can make breathing difficult, resulting in Altitude sickness. Issues related to altitude sickness are a major concern above 2,500m, and the climb takes place above 6000m, so trekkers should be aware of the issue and have proper acclimatization. Staying hydrated, listening to your body, and slow ascending are vital for minimizing the risk of Altitude sickness.

Physical Fitness

Climbing Island Peak requires good physical fitness, strength, endurance, and stamina. The climb from Base Camp to the summit requires energy and strength to handle steep ascents, glacier crossings, and technical sections. Thus, trekkers should be regularly trained before 1-2 months of the journey. Cardio exercise, including running and hiking, helps trekkers handle physical strain.

Technical Climbing

Another factor that makes climbing to the Island Peak complex is its technical climbing sections. However, peak climbing is beginner-friendly and doesn’t involve high technical skills. Yet, trekkers should know the techniques of how to cross icy glaciers and how to fix ropes. Thus, trekkers should know how to use crampons for grip on ice, handle an ice axe for balance, and clip into it securely. Likewise, trekkers should be familiar with equipment like harnesses and carabiners. Thus, the trek can be difficult for the climbers who can’t use the equipment.

How do I prepare for the Island Peak Expedition?

As the trek to Island peak climbing is challenging, it requires proper physical and mental preparation. Here is how you can prepare for the Island Peak expedition:

Physical Preparation

The Island peak climbing requires proper physical preparation to undertake the journey smoothly. The physical preparation includes cardiovascular endurance, strength training exercises, and hiking. Jogging, swimming, cycling, and climbing the stairs come under cardiovascular exercise, and lunges, squats, push-ups, pull-ups, and planks come under strength training.

Mental Preparation

Being mentally prepared is essential for the Island Peak climb. The journey passes through terrain with rough sections, where being calm and focused is crucial. Have a positive mindset and set realistic goals. Also, be involved in yoga and breathing exercises for your mental resilience.

Acclimatization

One of the best ways to prepare for Island Peak Climbing is to include the acclimatization day on the itinerary. As the trek takes trekkers to altitudes above 6,000m, the risk of altitude sickness is a major concern during the climb, requiring proper acclimatization. Gradual ascending, proper hydration, and listening to your body can also help you acclimate and minimize the risk of Altitude sickness.

Is Island Peak Climb for Beginners?

Climbing peaks have grabbed tourists’ attention in Nepal. The inflow of trekkers was huge in the past, but now, the number of climbing adventurers has also increased in Nepal. Not all experienced climbers come to Nepal, but the country has some beginner-friendly peaks to conquer, one of which is the island. Climbers with basic mountaineering and trekking experience at high elevations can complete the climb smoothly.

The Island Peak climb indeed involves some technical sections, but climbers can participate in training on Peak Climbing techniques during pre-climb training sessions. The trek also offers an option to combine with Everest Base Camp Trek, providing enough chances for trekkers to acclimatize. Yet, trekkers should be physically fit, learn basic knowledge of using technical equipment, and acclimatize properly to start the adventure.

Food and Accommodation During Peak Climbing

Food

The climb of Island Peak is challenging and takes place in most of the higher elevations. Thus, adventurers need to consume nutritious food. Well, fear not, Action Nepal Treks provide you with three-time meals a day throughout your climbing expedition of Island Peak that are fresh, healthy, and nutritious. Tea houses/lodges are where you’ll have your meal on the journey, except at the Island Peak Base camp, as there are no tea houses/lodges; at the base camp, our climbing team will cook food for you at the tent.

Local Tsampa porridge boiled Eggs, Oatmeal, Honey Tibetan bread, Corn Flakes, Pancakes, Muesli Breads, Fruits, Vegetables, and Hot drinks are popular menu options for morning meals en route. Likewise, Dhal Bhat Tarkari, Vegetable curry, Tibetan Bread, Potatoes, Various Soups, Sherpa Stew, Sandwiches, Momo, Macaroni dishes, Spaghetti Noodles, and Thukpa are options for lunch and dinner.

Best Time for Island Peak Climb

The Island Peak trip is an exhilarating experience during Spring and Autumn. The two seasons offer the ideal time for the expedition in Nepal. Spring from March to May is the best time to climb Island Peak due to the stable and favorable weather conditions it offers. The best part of trekking during Spring is the trails full of rhododendron blooms. The temperature during the time is also mild, making navigation easy.

Autumn from September to November is also the perfect time for a Himalayan climbing experience, including for Island Peak. Due to favorable conditions for climbing and trekking, the season is most preferred by adventure seekers worldwide. During Autumn, trekkers face dry trails and clear mountain views en route, making the climb more pleasant. Trekkers see a rejuvenating environment with green hills and deep valleys that come after rainfall. Moreover, the season has stable and mild weather and temperature, minimizing the chances of unforeseen situations.

Our fixed departure dates and per-person pricing make it simple for both solo travelers and small groups to join the adventure. It’s a great chance to meet new people and share the experience with other trekkers. Just choose your preferred date, and we’ll take care of the rest.
