Khopra Danda Trek Overview

The Khopra Danda Trek, aka Khopra Ridge Trek, is one of the non-crowded treks in the Annapurna region, offering a quieter trail away from the busier routes. The journey begins with gentle walks through Gurung and Magar villages, where you’ll see stone houses, terraced fields, and warm hospitality set the tone for your adventure. As you gain altitude, the path winds through peaceful rhododendron forests and open alpine meadows, with each turn revealing more of the surrounding peaks.

The main highlight of the Khopra Danda trekking is the Khopra Danda ridgeline. From here, you’ll witness a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Another key highlight is the climb to Khayer Lake, a sacred high-altitude lake at the foot of Annapurna South. Revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, the site combines spiritual calm with jaw-dropping mountain backdrops. Along the way, you’ll also witness some of the most memorable Himalayan sunrises in viewpoints like Muldai and the famous Poon Hill.

The trek route in the Annapurna region of Nepal only opened in 2012, and isn’t overrun by tourism. Tourism here is sustainable. You’ll stay at community-run lodges (teahouses) managed by local villagers, so your stay directly supports their livelihoods. It’s also a rare chance to experience genuine hospitality, learn about local traditions, and enjoy a journey that’s as meaningful as it is beautiful.

Khopra Danda Trek Itinerary

On the first day of the Khopra Ridge trek, you’ll travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara. During the drive, you’ll see diverse landscapes with roadside towns, tea stalls, and farmland where locals tend their crops. As you near Pokhara, the lakeside city of Pokhara greets you with the calm waters of Phewa Lake and the sight of Machapuchare (Fishtail) reflected on a clear day. In the evening, you can stroll out to cafes and shops or enjoy the mountain views from your hotel.

Day 2: Pokhara to Ghandruk Drive by Private Jeep, Trek to Tadapani

Now, it’s time to hit the trail. The morning drive will take you to Ghandruk from Pokhara. You drive past small farming villages like Birethanti, Syauli Bazaar, and Kimche as you follow the Modi Khola on your left. Ghandruk is one of the largest Gurung settlements in Nepal and a popular destination for many trekkers. It is known for its slate-roofed houses, traditional dress, and cultural museum.

Finally, the Khopra Danda trek route starts from Ghandruk. The trek from Ghandruk winds through mossy oak and rhododendron forests alive with the sounds of birds and insects. You’ll trek to Tadapani, meaning “far water”. It is a peaceful settlement perched on a ridge and offers close-up views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

It begins with a steady ascent, which can be challenging, but the trail is well-marked. You’ll trek through similar rhododendron and oak forests, which transform into a vivid display of red and pink blooms in spring.

As you climb gradually, the forests open up to alpine meadows and grasslands. You can have your first glimpse of the stunning mountain scenery from the ridgelines. You’ll finally reach Dobato by evening. It is a quiet village by a hillside where you’ll spend time by the fireplace in the lodge dining room, swapping stories with other trekkers.

Day 4: Early Morning Hike to Muldai Viewpoint, Trek to Chistibung

On day four of the Khopra Danda Trek itinerary, you’ll hike to Muldai Viewpoint for the first sunrise views. It takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace. At the top, you can view around 25 peaks, including the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, along with Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, and Gangapurna. After a few sessions of rest and photography, you’ll return to Dobato and energize yourself with breakfast.

Then, you’ll trek down to Chistibung. You’ll enter the serene, lush forests on your descent, where you may also spot Himalayan monals and tahr grazing en route (though sightings are rare). Day 5: Chistibung to Khopra Danda

Today, you’ll hike to Khopra Dhanda. The climb is a rewarding and defining part of the trek. After leaving Chistibung, the trail makes a steady ascent that takes you from the forested hillsides into open alpine meadows. This part of the trek is a constant climb, but the path is not technically difficult. As you gain elevation, the scenery changes dramatically. You will pass above the treeline, where the lush forests give way to grassy slopes and a more exposed, open ridge.

The climb reveals the mighty Dhaulagiri massif to the west. This view becomes more striking with every step. The final stretch ends at the Khopra Danda ridge, where a whole 360-degree panorama opens up. You can witness the entire Annapurna range, including Annapurna I, II, III, and Annapurna South, fill the eastern skyline from the Khopra Danda Ridge. Down below, you can see the Kali Gandaki River carving its way through one of the deepest gorges in the world.

Day 6: Trek to Khayer Lake and Back to Khopra Danda

This day is a challenging but highly rewarding out-and-back trek to the sacred Khayer Lake. The route from Khopra Danda is a steep, steady ascent across rocky terrain and yak pastures. You’ll pass yak herders’ huts and may spot blue sheep grazing on the rocky slopes. After that, you are led to a serene high-altitude basin. The lake itself lies at the foot of Annapurna South, so you can see its deep blue waters reflecting a dramatic wall of ice and rock.

It is adorned with colorful prayer flags and revered as a spiritual pilgrimage site. During the Janai Purnima festival in July/August, locals and pilgrims take a dip in its water, believing it brings spiritual merit. Standing at this spot, with the peaceful stillness of the lake and the awe-inspiring mountain backdrop, is one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake trek.

The return Khopra Danda Trek route is well-defined and easy on your legs compared to the challenging climbs of previous days. As you descend, the towering mountain panoramas also change into terraced fields and rolling hills. The journey culminates at the charming Swanta village, where the trail meets with the local farms and a more settled way of life.

Day 8: Swanta Village to Ghorepani

From Swanta, you’ll trek to Ghorepani, rejoining the primary Annapurna trekking circuit. At first, you make a gentle climb through terraced farmland and green forests. However, it gets steeper as you pass through dense rhododendron forests, eventually meeting the main trail at Chittre. It’s still a long stretch of stone steps from there to Ghorepani.

As you enter Ghorepani, you can see the difference in atmosphere. The village is more lively, and people seem more energetic, which is a sharp contrast to the quiet of the Khopra Danda route. On clear evenings, you also get a view of the Dhaulagiri massif from the lodges.

You can see the mighty Dhaulagiri massif, Annapurna (I, II, III, IV), Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, and more.

After returning to Ghorepani for breakfast, the long descent begins. The Khopra Danda trekking trail is steep and includes an extended stretch of stone staircases. This descent passes through rhododendron and oak forests and terraced hillsides until you reach Ulleri (a traditional Magar village). Here, a jeep will be waiting for you. The ride back to Pokhara is beautiful, although it might be bumpy at times. This ride marks the end of your Khopra Danda trip in Nepal.

Khopra Danda Trek Route Map

Return Trail

How Hard is Khopra Danda Compared to Other Annapurna Treks?

The Khopra Danda Trek is considered a moderate trek in Nepal. You’ll walk 5–6 hours a day with regular climbs and descents. It’s more challenging than the Ghorepani–Poon Hill loop (max 3,210 m) but less demanding than the Annapurna Circuit or remote Nar Phu Valley. You’ll get significant viewpoints and peaceful trails, without committing to the extreme distances or passes of higher routes.

Two Brutal Days: Climbing 1,600 m in 48 Hours

This section is the most demanding part of the trek. From Chistibung, you will ascend approximately 660 m to reach Khopra Ridge at 3,660 m. The very next day, you will undertake a steep ascent of nearly 940 m to the sacred Khayer Lake. The lake is situated at 4,660 m, the highest point of the trek.

The Khayer Lake climb is a long, exposed ascent over rocky paths, yak pastures, and open ridges with no tea houses or shelters en route. The thin air makes every incline harder, and the weather can shift from calm sunshine to biting wind and fog in minutes. Wind speeds above 40 km/h are common on the ridge, adding to your fatigue. You have to make gradual ascents to avoid altitude sickness (AMS).

The Staircase Marathon: 1,000m Gains and Losses Daily

The Tadapani to Ghorepani section has a mix of steep climbs and descents. You’ll tackle many long stone staircases (sometimes up and sometimes down), especially around Ghorepani and Ulleri. Here, 3,000–3,700 uneven stone steps challenge your endurance and knees. It moves between narrow, rocky ridges and muddy forest paths that get slippery during the monsoon season. Using trekking poles will help you keep your balance and take some pressure off your legs, especially on the steep climbs and tricky sections.

Varied Weather Conditions on Khopra Danda Trek

In this high-altitude trek, the weather is unpredictable. In spring and autumn, you’ll enjoy clear, sunny days with temperatures between 10–18°C at high spots, but nights can get chilly, dropping to around –4°C. Monsoon season (June–August) brings heavy rains, muddy, slippery trails, and even landslides, especially in the lower forests. The views are blocked due to fog, making trekking more challenging. Similarly, winter is harsh, with nights dropping below –10°C above 4,000m, and snow blocks the trail.

Long Stretches Without Support Between Dobato and Khayer Lake

Once you pass Tadapani, the trekking route becomes quieter, with fewer stops. Between Dobato, Khopra Ridge, and Khayer Lake (8–12km apart), tea houses and snack spots are rare or nonexistent for hours. Thus, you’ll need to carry enough water and snacks for 3-5 hours of the climbs. Mobile phone signals are also patchy, so don’t expect to be constantly connected. The peaceful isolation can be a welcome break from crowded trails, but it also means you have to be self-reliant and prepared.

Challenges for Khopra Danda Trek Preparation

If you’re new to hiking, stuck at a desk all day, or haven’t worked out much lately, preparing for the Khopra Danda trek itself will push you. You’ll need to build your cardio, leg strength, and core muscles to handle the steep climbs and constant elevation changes. You need to hike 3–4 hills or stair workouts per week for at least 4–6 weeks to prepare your body. More importantly, you have to be mentally prepared for long days on quiet, remote trails, which demand patience and focus. It won’t be easy, but the payoff is totally worth it.

Dates & Prices

Our fixed departure dates and per-person pricing make it simple for both solo travelers and small groups to join the adventure. It’s a great chance to meet new people and share the experience with other trekkers. Just choose your preferred date, and we’ll take care of the rest.
