Annapurna Circuit Trek Via Nar Phu Valley Trip Information

Nar Phu Valley via Annapurna Circuit Trek Route

The total distance to be covered with the Nar Phu Valley Trek via the Annapurna Circuit is approximately 111.7 kilometers. The starting point of the trek is Besishar, which we will reach by road, covering 237 kilometers. Staring our hiking journey from there, we will pass through diverse landscapes and charming villages. Passing through popular landmarks such as Koto and Meta, we will reach the base of Nar Phu Valley.

With the continuation of Hiking, we will reach Phu Valley, followed by Nar Valley the next day. In these villages, we will experience the unique Tibetan-inspired Buddhist culture. Similarly, the views of the surrounding landscapes and mountains from here, along with traditional houses, are so mesmerizing.

After our short exploration of Nar Phu Valley, our trek now starts to rejoin the Annapurna Circuit. In the remaining days, we will be following the courier route, making our way through Manang and crossing the highest pass, Thorong La Pass. We will also visit the Muktinath temple, and from there, we will take a 163-kilometer ride back to Pokhara. In 13 days, this beautiful expedition was completed upon reaching Pokhara Valley.

The Two Passes of Annapurna Circuit and Nar Phu Trek

Trekking to Nar Phu Valley via Annapurna Circuit includes crossing two passes: Kang La Pass and Thorang La Pass. Tackling each of the passes offers you unique views and challenges. Passing these two passes offers you a greater sense of achievement. However, if you want to complete the trek with ease, it is generally recommended that you make a proper preparation and have a greater level of fitness. Here is a look at these two passes:

Kang La Pass (Nar Phu Trek)

Elevation: Approximately 5,306 meters (17,408 feet)

This is the highest pass you will cross while trekking this trek. It connects Nar Phu Valley and Annapurna Circuit. This pass is visited less by trekkers than Thorong La Pass due to its higher altitude level and some difficulty. However, with this trek, you can witness the breathing panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Also, located at 5,306 meters, the risk of altitude sickness is also high. As the area is less crowded, you can enjoy the beauty of the landscape and the serenity of the remote valleys.

Thorong La Pass (Annapurna Circuit)

Elevation: 5,416 meters (17,769 feet)

You will cross this pass at the end of your journey. In the 12 days, you will cross this another challenging adventure in your Narphu Valley and Annapurna Circuit trek. Upon making your way through this challenging path, you will achieve the most rewarding views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Reaching the top of this pass is the highlight for many trekkers, marking a significant achievement. However, similar to the Khang La Pass, to complete this adventure, you must be physically fit and mentally prepared.

How Hard Is Nar Phu Valley Trek With \ Annapurna Circuit?

The Nar Phu Valley Trek with Annapurna Circuit presents you with various challenges. Considered to be slightly more difficult than other popular routes such as Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, you should be properly prepared if you are trekking towards this region. With a combination of two trekking trails, with this trek you can witness the natural scenery along with a unique cultural experience. Be ready to face all the challenges that come your way with this adventure.

Here is the breakdown of difficulties you can face with Nar Phu Valley with the Annapurna Circuit trek:

High Altitude

With this adventure, you will have to pass the two high passes, which cross over 5,000 meters. While crossing these sections, the risk of getting altitude sickness increases, making your trek at high altitudes more challenging. You can feel symptoms like headaches, nausea, and fatigue, which can sometimes be life-threatening, too.

Remote Terrain

The trek takes you to the remote region of Nepal. Located at a higher altitude, the region’s terrain is rugged, with remote villages. Most of the sections of this adventure are steep and rocky. Sometimes, it can also get challenging to navigate the paths as they are poorly defined. With the involvement of shorter days and remote terrain, the trek can be quite challenging.

Weather Conditions

As we know, the weather in the high altitude places in the Himalayas is unpredictable, and the same goes for this trek. In the morning, you can see a beautiful sunrise view. However, in no minutes, the clouds cover the area, and it can rain. Also, the chances of encountering mild snowfall, even during the peak season, are also high. The temperature below 10 degrees in higher elevations can also be a problem for some trekkers.

Limited Accommodations

As the trek is located in a remote region and at a higher altitude, getting many accommodation options is not possible. Also, as the less frequented, many people are not invested in making new accommodations for trekkers. Although you will get a number of loading facilities, the one you get offers you the most comfortable stay. If you want a luxurious stay, then this route cannot be on your bucket list.

Physical Demands

With the involvement of high altitudes, remote regions, and longer hiking days, the trek is physically demanding. You need to have a good fitness level to cross the steep ascents and descents. Building stamina and endurance is important. Thus, if you lack some level of fitness, this trek can result in a challenging one instead of a rewarding one.

Altitude Sickness And Acclimatization

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when you ascend to high altitudes too quickly. Some of its symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. As you trek in the Nar Phu Valley, you will gain significant elevation. Thus increasing the risk of altitude sickness. Acclimatization is essential to prevent yourself from this. Acclimatization involves gradually allowing your body to adjust to higher altitudes, usually by ascending slowly and spending extra days at certain elevations.

Ways To Prevent It

  • Plan your itinerary to include rest days at higher elevations to allow your body time to acclimatize.
  • You should drink plenty of water ( 3 to 4 liters) throughout the day to prevent dehydration, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Maintain a balanced diet, focusing on carbohydrates to provide energy for acclimatization.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Smoking as they can hinder acclimatization and increase the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Consult a healthcare professional about taking acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent altitude sickness.
  • Be aware of any symptoms of altitude sickness, and if you feel unwell, take it seriously and rest or descend if needed.
  • Wear comfortable, warm clothing and footwear to help you stay active and engaged during the trek.

Communication During the Nar Phu Trek

Communication options during the Nar Phu Valley trek can be quite limited due to the remoteness of the region. While mobile network coverage has improved in recent years, you may find that service is occasional, especially in the more isolated areas. Major service providers in Nepal, such as Ncell and Nepal Telecom, offer some coverage in the region, but it is best to manage your expectations, as connectivity can be unreliable.

If staying in touch with family or friends is essential, consider investing in a portable satellite phone or renting a satellite communication device for the duration of your trek. For staying connected, many teahouses and lodges now offer Wi-Fi, but speeds may be slow, and it is often available only for a fee. When you do have internet access, it is a good time to check in with loved ones or update social media about your adventure.

Accommodations And Food Availability During Journey

With the remoteness of the location, getting a variety of accommodations is slightly difficulty. The most common means of lodging is a teahouse. Although these accommodating places do not offer you luxurious staying options, they offer you basic facilities that are good enough for you to sustain yourself in this region. They offer you a shared room, a bed, blankets, and communal dining areas. As you ascend higher, the teahouse becomes more limited with an increase in price. However, in popular spots like Nar and Phu, you can get comfortable lodges.

Similarly, teahouses make food available. You will get a mix of both local and Western dishes. However, there are not many varieties of dishes to try on. As you go further into the valley, the menu may become more limited, with fewer options. Here is what you can get:

  • Breakfast: Pancakes, roti, bread, tea, and coffee
  • Dinner and Lunch: Dal Bhat, noodles, soups, momo, chowmin, and more

It is always a good idea to carry some energy bars or snacks for the trek. Having these snacks during the trek can supplement your diet and provide quick energy when needed. Always ensure that the food is cooked fresh, and drink only boiled or purified water to avoid any health issues during your journey.

The Availability Of Electricity And Drinking Water

Electricity availability during the Nar Phu Valley trek can vary significantly from one village to another. In more developed areas, such as Nar and Phu, you can expect access to electricity. Many teahouses will have charging facilities for your electronic devices, but it is advisable to bring a power bank to ensure you have enough battery life for your devices. Keep in mind that the availability of electricity may be limited to certain hours, so plan your device charging accordingly.

As for drinking water, you will find several options along the trek. While some teahouses provide boiled or filtered water, it is crucial to ensure that any water you drink is purified to avoid waterborne illnesses. Carrying water purification tablets or a portable water filter can provide you with safe drinking water from local sources. Additionally, buying bottled water is an option in some villages, but it is worth noting that this can be less environmentally friendly. Stay hydrated, especially in higher altitudes, where dehydration can occur more quickly.

Preparation Tips For Nar Phu Valley Trek

Physical Preparation

To prepare physically for the Nar Phu Valley trek, you should focus on building stamina and strength. This trek involves long hours of walking through diverse terrain, so incorporating cardio exercises like hikingrunning, or cycling into your routine is essential. You should aim for at least 4 to 5 days of cardio and leg strengthening workouts weekly.  Additionally, flexibility exercises and stretching routines will keep your muscles limber and less prone to injury during the trek.

Mental Preparation

Mental resilience is equally important when preparing for the Nar Phu Valley trek. You can prepare yourself mentally by practicing mindfulnessmeditation, or even visualization techniques. You can picture yourself overcoming these obstacles and focus on the rewarding feeling that comes with completing each section of the trek. Maintaining a positive mindset can make a big difference when you are on the trail and might feel the strain of the challenge.

Permits for Nar Phu Valley and Annapurna Circuit

Nar Phu Valley Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

The Nar Phu Valley is a restricted region, and you must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to access it. This permit ensures the preservation of the remote culture and environment in the valley. Season Cost

There are two types of TIMS cards: one for trekkers traveling independently and another for those with guides, each with a different cost. Like the ACAP, the TIMS card can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara and must be carried with you on the trek.

Action Nepal Treks Annapurna circuit

We've recently returned from hiking the Annapurna circuit. It was a trip of a lifetime that was made that bit more special by Simbir and his team.
