Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Overview

The Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek from Pokhara is a 5-day Himalayan adventure for travelers with limited time who still want to experience the heart of the Annapurna region. Private jeep transfers help bypass some of the lower sections, allowing you to reach the Annapurna Conservation Area faster and spend more time on the mountain trails. The trek takes you through deep valleys, dense forests, glacial landscapes, and dramatic mountain terrain before reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m (13,550 ft). Along the way, enjoy close-up views of Machhapuchhare (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, and Gangapurna.

Despite its short duration, the trek offers more than mountain scenery. The trail passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, including Jhinu Danda, Chhomrong, and Sinuwa. Here, you can experience local hospitality while staying in mountain teahouses. Expect long days of walking and plenty of stone steps, making this itinerary best suited to fit trekkers prepared for a fast-paced journey. From visiting Machhapuchhare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp to relaxing in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda, this trek delivers a compact but rewarding Annapurna experience.

5 days Annapurna Base Camp Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Drive From Pokhara to Jhinu Danda And Trek to Upper Sinuwa

The first day of our trip begins with a private jeep drive from Pokhara to Jhinu Danda. The drive takes us past changing terrains, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape and far-standing Himalayas along the route. After around three hours of continuous drive, we will finally arrive at Jhinu Danda in the afternoon.

From Jhinu Danda, we will move toward Sinuwa. Along the way, we will cross Modi Khola via a suspension bridge and a few small remote villages to reach the first stop of our trek, the Chhomrong village. After enjoying a meal in Chhomrong, we will then continue trekking to our final destination, Upper Sinuwa. To arrive at Sinuwa, we will have to ascend a stone staircase that winds through lush forest. Finally, after a while of uphill climb, the village of Sinuwa comes into sight where we will rest for the night before heading forward.

Day 2: Upper Sinuwa to Deurali

The second day of our Annapurna Base Camp trek starts as usual with a tasty breakfast meal alongside beautiful mountain views. After an early morning breakfast, we will leave Sinuwa and start trekking towards Deurali. This trek will be a bit challenging as, from yesterday, we will have to take steep ascends and walk past rocky terrains. On the way, we will have an opportunity to take a glimpse into the lifestyle of walking across several small villages and settlements.

Further, as we continue through Modi Khola Valley, we will arrive at the Himalayan Hotel in time for our lunch break, crossing the sacred Barah Temple and a few waterfalls on the way. After refueling ourselves, we get back on the trail that leads to Deurali. To finally arrive at Deurali, we will have to cross the final hurdle with a very steep and long ascent. At last, we arrive at this beautiful village to spend the night in one of the lodges.

Day 3: Deurali to MBC (Machhapuchhre Base Camp) to ABC (Annapurna Base Camp)

Day 3 is the highlight of the trek as we finally make our way to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). After an early breakfast at Deurali, we follow the trail uphill through the narrow Modi Khola Valley towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC). The route passes beneath steep cliffs and through rugged mountain terrain before reaching MBC, where we enjoy close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and the surrounding Annapurna peaks. We stop to enjoy the scenery before continuing towards our final destination.

From MBC, the trail enters deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary, where the landscape becomes increasingly open and alpine. The route climbs gradually through glacial terrain and rocky moraines before reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m (13,550 ft). Surrounded by a spectacular natural amphitheater of Himalayan peaks, we have time to enjoy panoramic views and watch the light change over the mountains. After around 5-6 hours of trekking, we stay at Annapurna Base Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: ABC to Upper Sinuwa

We wake before dawn at Annapurna Base Camp to watch the first sunlight illuminate the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After enjoying the sunrise over the Annapurna range, we have breakfast. After that, we begin the long descent towards Upper Sinuwa, retracing the route through the Annapurna Sanctuary.

The trail passes through the rocky moraines and narrow canyon around Deurali before continuing past waterfalls and back into the forest. As we lose altitude, the landscape gradually becomes greener and the air warmer. The descent continues through Himalayan, Dovan, and Bamboo, where we stop for lunch and a short rest.

Afterward, we follow the Modi Khola through the bamboo forest before tackling the final uphill sections to Upper Sinuwa. After around 7-8 hours of trekking, we arrive at the teahouse, where we can relax and enjoy a warm dinner before spending our final night on the trail.

Day 5: Upper Sinuwa Trek to Jhinu Danda, Drive To Pokhara by Private Jeep

The final day begins with an early breakfast at Upper Sinuwa before we retrace our steps towards Jhinu Danda. The trail first descends through the forest to the Chhomrong Khola before climbing the steep stone steps back up to Chhomrong village. After a short rest and lunch, we continue downhill through terraced fields and local settlements until we reach Jhinu Danda. If time allows, we can relax in the nearby natural hot springs and soothe our tired muscles after several demanding days on the trail.

From Jhinu Danda, we cross the suspension bridge over the Modi Khola and meet our private jeep for the drive back to Pokhara. The scenic journey takes around 2.5-3 hours, following the winding road through the river valley and surrounding countryside. We arrive in Pokhara by afternoon, marking the end of our short but rewarding Annapurna Base Camp adventure.

Why Choose the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Instead of the Standard Route?

The 5-Day Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek lets you experience Annapurna Base Camp faster without missing the main mountain experience. The standard Annapurna Base Camp trek itineraries last 9-12 days. They take more time to explore the lower foothills, villages, and sections around Ghorepani and Poon Hill. But this shorter route uses private jeep transportation to skip much of the lower trail and start trekking closer to the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Annapurna Base Camp
Annapurna Base Camp

That means fewer days on the trail, fewer nights in teahouses, and less time spent on lower-altitude sections. Yet the reward remains the same: reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m (13,550 ft) and standing beneath the towering Annapurna Massif. This 5-day Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek itinerary is perfect if you have limited time but want to reach ABC. It lets you focus on the high Himalayan experience without stretching your trip to two weeks.

Is the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek Right for You?

If you’re reasonably fit, comfortable with long walking days, and have limited time, yes. The 5-day route is a great option for reaching ABC quickly, but it may not be the best choice if you prefer a slow and relaxed trek. Here’s a quick checklist to help you decide.

  • Can you walk for 6-8 hours a day? Most trekking days are long, with plenty of uphill and downhill sections.
  • Are you comfortable with steep steps? The trail around Chhomrong and Sinuwa involves numerous stone staircases, so strong legs and knees help.
  • Can you handle rapid altitude gain? You climb to 4,130 m in just three days, so walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated, and pay attention to any altitude symptoms.
  • Do you have only a few days? If you want the ABC experience but cannot spare 10-12 days, this shorter itinerary saves valuable time.

What Do You Gain and Miss by Choosing the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The short trek is a great alternative for travelers who are short on time, allowing you to reach Annapurna Base Camp in less time and focus on the region’s dramatic high-mountain scenery. However, the faster itinerary also means trading some of the cultural experiences, lower-altitude landscapes, and slower-paced journey of a longer route for a more direct adventure.

What You Gain

  • More time saved: Reach ABC in 5 days instead of spending 10-12 days on the trail.
  • Lower trekking costs: Fewer nights mean fewer accommodation and meal expenses.
  • Faster access to the high mountains: You spend more of your trekking time around the dramatic Annapurna Sanctuary.
  • Easier logistics: Private jeep transfers make getting to and from the trailhead quicker and more comfortable.

What You Miss

  • Poon Hill: You skip Ghorepani and Poon Hill, including the famous sunrise panorama.
  • Slow acclimatization: The shorter itinerary gives your body less time to adjust to altitude.
  • More village time: You have less time to explore traditional villages and experience local mountain life.
  • A relaxed pace: If you love slow mornings, leisurely walks, and stopping whenever a view catches your eye, the standard route will suit you better.

What is the best time of year to do the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The best time for Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Since the itinerary is compressed into just five days, stable weather is especially important to stay on schedule and enjoy clear mountain views.

trekkers standing in front of Machhapuchhre at local teahouse at ABC

On Seasons

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is generally the best season for the Short ABC Trek. The monsoon has cleared the dust and clouds, bringing crisp air, clear skies, and excellent mountain visibility. Days are usually comfortable for trekking, while nights become increasingly cold as you approach ABC. This is also the busiest trekking season, so book your accommodation in advance.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is another excellent time to trek to ABC, especially if you enjoy colorful landscapes. Rhododendrons bloom across the forests around Chhomrong and Sinuwa, adding vibrant colors to the trail. Mornings are generally clear, although clouds can build in the afternoons, particularly toward the end of the season. Temperatures are also generally comfortable for trekking.

Off Seasons

Winter (December to February)

Winter brings cold temperatures and a higher chance of snow on the upper sections of the route. The trails can be quieter, and the skies can be beautifully clear, but snowfall around Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp, and ABC may make the trek more challenging. Because the itinerary has little flexibility, winter conditions can also cause delays.

Summer (June to August)

Monsoon is the least favorable season for this short itinerary. Heavy rainfall can make stone steps slippery and increase the risk of landslides along the road to Jhinu Danda. Clouds often obscure the mountain views, while leeches are also common in the wetter forest sections. These conditions can make completing the trek within five days more difficult.

How difficult is the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The 5-day Short Trek to Annapurna Base Camp is moderately difficult to demanding. The standard ABC trek allows more time to build up to higher elevations, while this shorter itinerary packs the same major climb into just a few days. That makes the trek more physically demanding and leaves less time for your body to adjust to the altitude.

The main challenges are:

  • Rapid altitude gain: You climb from around 820 m in Pokhara to 4,130 m at ABC in just three days, so you have limited time to acclimatize.
  • Long descent: Day 4 involves a long downhill trek with plenty of steep stone steps, which can be tough on your knees and legs.
  • Long trekking days: You need to trek around 6-8 hours per day, often on uneven and steep terrain.

Is the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek suitable for beginners?

It may be possible for a beginner, but it is not the easiest ABC route to start with. If you are new to trekking but already have good fitness and regularly hike, run, cycle, or train, you may be able to handle the 5-day itinerary with proper preparation.

However, if you have little experience with long hikes or high-altitude trekking, the standard ABC route is a better choice. Its slower pace gives you more time to adjust to the altitude and recover between demanding days.

How Fit Do You Need to Be for the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek requires good cardiovascular fitness and strong legs for the Short ABC Trek. You should be comfortable walking for several hours straight and handling steep stairs without exhausting yourself.

  • Cardio endurance: You should be comfortable with activities such as running, cycling, brisk walking, or hiking for extended periods.
  • Leg strength: Strong quads, calves, and glutes will help with the many stone steps, particularly around Chhomrong and during the long descent from ABC.
  • Core strength: A strong core helps with balance and stability on uneven, rocky trails while carrying a daypack.

How to Prepare for the 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek

Start training at least 6 weeks before your Annapurna trek. You don’t need a complicated gym routine. Focus on building endurance, leg strength, and hiking experience.

  • Build Your Cardio – 3 Days a Week: Mix brisk walking, jogging, cycling, stair climbing, or incline treadmill walking. Gradually increase the duration rather than trying to go all-out from day one.
  • Strengthen Your Legs – 2 Days a Week: Focus on squats, lunges, step-ups, and calf raises to prepare for the steep climbs and long descents. Add planks or other core exercises for stability.
  • Go on Practice Hikes – 1 Day a Wee: Take a 4-6-hour hike on varied terrain and gradually get used to longer days on your feet. Wear the boots you plan to use in Nepal and carry a daypack similar to what you’ll take on the trek.
  • Practice Good Hydration and Pacing: Stay well hydrated during training and learn to maintain a steady pace rather than rushing uphill. At altitude, listen to your body and report symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue to your guide rather than trying to push through them.

Altitude medication such as acetazolamide should only be used after discussing it with a qualified healthcare professional.

Is Altitude Sickness a Risk on the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Yes, altitude sickness is a real risk on the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek, especially because you reach 4,130 m in just three days. Although Annapurna Base Camp is lower than Everest Base Camp or Thorong La Pass, the rapid elevation gain gives your body less time to adjust. The risk increases as you climb above Deurali and becomes more significant around Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp.

Here are the main things to keep in mind:

  • Watch for early symptoms: Headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping can all be signs of mild acute mountain sickness (AMS).
  • Take serious symptoms seriously: Breathlessness at rest, a worsening cough, chest tightness, confusion, severe difficulty walking, or loss of coordination can indicate serious altitude illness such as HAPE or HACE and require immediate descent and medical attention.
  • Walk bistari, bistari: Keep a slow, steady pace rather than rushing uphill. Being fit does not make you immune to altitude sickness.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink regularly throughout the trek and avoid excessive alcohol, which can worsen dehydration and make symptoms harder to recognize.
  • Tell your guide how you feel: Don’t hide a headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue just because you want to reach ABC. Your guide can assess your condition and decide whether you should continue or descend.
  • Consult wih doctor about Diamox: If you want to carry acetazolamide, discuss its use with a qualified healthcare professional before the trek. Do not self-medicate.

The most important rule is simple: never push through worsening altitude symptoms just to stay on schedule. On a compressed 5-day trek, reaching ABC is exciting, but getting back down safely matters more.

What are the teahouse and accommodation options like on the short ABC trek?

Accommodation on the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek is provided in locally owned, family-run teahouses along the trail. These simple mountain lodges provide both your room and meals, making them the main place to eat, sleep, and relax during the trek. You will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the teahouses, with common options including dal bhat, noodles, rice, pasta, soups, potatoes, eggs, momos, and bread. Since food supplies become harder to transport at higher elevations, menus generally become more limited as you approach ABC.

Rooms are usually twin-sharing, with two single beds, mattresses, pillows, and basic bedding. Bathrooms are generally shared, although some lodges in lower villages may offer attached facilities. As you climb toward Deurali and Annapurna Base Camp, accommodation becomes more basic due to the remote location. Rooms are smaller, facilities are limited, and you may need to share rooms with other trekkers during busy periods.

The teahouses also provide useful amenities, but some come at an additional cost. Hot showers typically cost NPR 200-500, while charging electronic devices can cost around NPR 100-300. Wi-Fi may also be available for an extra fee, although the connection becomes less reliable at higher elevations. In the evening, trekkers usually gather around the communal dining hall’s central stove to eat, warm up, and socialize before heading to their unheated rooms for the night.

What permits do I need for the Annapurna Base Camp short trek?

You need only one permit for the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking Route: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). If you book through a trekking agency like Action Nepal Treks, your agency can arrange the permit before you begin the trek.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

The ACAP is required to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area, which includes the entire Annapurna Base Camp route. You can obtain the permit through the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), including its official online permit system. The ACAP headquarters is in Pokhara, making it convenient to arrange the permit before heading to the trail.

Category ACAP Fee
Foreign nationals NPR 3,000 (~USD 22)
SAARC nationals NPR 1,000 (~USD 7)
Nepali citizens NPR 300 (~USD 2)
Children under 10 Free

Where to get it: You can apply through the NTNC online permit system or obtain it from an authorized permit counter in Nepal. If you’re trekking with an agency, they normally arrange it on your behalf.

Important Note

  • USD equivalents are approximate and can vary with exchange rates.
  • Permit fees and trekking regulations can change, so it’s worth checking the latest Nepal Tourism Board or NTNC information before your trip. If you book the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Action Nepal Treks, the required permits are already included in your package, so you don’t have to deal with the paperwork yourself.

Do I need a guide or porter for the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Yes, you need a licensed trekking guide for the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Since the route passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, current regulations require foreign trekkers to trek with a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency. Independent solo trekking is not permitted on the route.

Trekkers descending stone path
Trekkers descending stone path

A porter isn’t mandatory, but having one is especially helpful on this 5-day ABC Short Trek itinerary. With 6-8 hours of trekking each day, steep stone steps, and rapid altitude gain, carrying only a light daypack can make the trek much more comfortable. A porter can carry your main luggage while you focus on the trail.

Your guide also does more than lead the way. They can monitor you for altitude sickness, help arrange accommodation along the trek, assist at checkpoints, and coordinate emergency support if needed. When you book with a registered trekking agency, they usually provide guides and porters, which makes the trip easier, safer, and compliant with current trekking requirements.

How to Trek Annapurna Sustainably?

Trekking in the Annapurna region comes with a responsibility to protect its trails, landscapes, and local communities. A 5-day trek may be short, but you can still make a positive impact along the way by keeping the trail clean, using local resources wisely, and supporting the communities you visit.

Keep the Trail Clean

The Annapurna region has limited waste-management facilities, especially in higher villages, so every trekker needs to do their part.

  • Carry your own waste: Keep a small bag in your daypack for snack wrappers, tissues, and other rubbish, and dispose of it properly when you reach a suitable facility.
  • Avoid single-use plastic: Carry a reusable water bottle and use water purification tablets or other safe purification methods instead of buying multiple plastic bottles.
  • Take batteries and electronics with you: Do not leave batteries or other electronic waste in teahouses or along the trail. Carry them back to Pokhara or Kathmandu for proper disposal.

Use Mountain Resources Carefully

Resources such as water, fuel, and electricity become more limited as you climb higher, so small actions can make a difference.

  • Limit hot showers: Hot water requires fuel and energy to heat, so skip unnecessary showers or keep them short.
  • Use electricity responsibly: Charge your devices when needed and unplug them once they are fully charged.
  • Stay on the marked trail: Avoid cutting across switchbacks or walking through vegetation. Sticking to established trails helps prevent erosion and protects the surrounding landscape.

Support Local Communities

Your spending can directly support the people who live and work along the Annapurna trail.

  • Eat local food: Choose local meals such as dal bhat, noodles, soups, and Tibetan-style dishes at teahouses instead of relying heavily on imported snacks.
  • Buy locally made products: If you want souvenirs, consider purchasing handicrafts and other products made by local communities.
  • Choose responsible trekking companies: Trek with a registered local agency that pays fair wages, provides proper insurance, keeps porter loads reasonable, and offers good working conditions for its staff.

Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek vs Poon Hill Trek; Which Is Better?

Both the Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Poon Hill Trek showcase the great beauty of the Annapurna region, but they deliver very different trekking experiences. Short ABC takes you deep into the mountains and up to 4,130 m, while Poon Hill keeps things lower and more relaxed, with a focus on sunrise views, forests, and traditional villages. Your choice mainly depends on how challenging you want the trek to be and what you want to see along the way.

The Short ABC Trek is the better pick if you want a more demanding adventure and the chance to stand at Annapurna Base Camp surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. The 5-day itinerary involves around 6-8 hours of trekking per day, steep stone steps, and rapid altitude gain, so it suits reasonably fit trekkers who are comfortable with a faster pace.

The Poon Hill Trek is a gentler option and works well for beginners, families, and travelers who want a more relaxed introduction to the Himalayas. Reaching around 3,210 m, the route passes through rhododendron forests and traditional Gurung villages such as Ghandruk. Its biggest highlight is the early-morning sunrise from Poon Hill, with wide views across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Comparison Short ABC Trek Poon Hill Trek
Best for Fit trekkers seeking a challenge Beginners, families, and casual hikers
Duration 5 days Usually 3-5 days
Highest point of the trek 4,130 m (Annapurna Base Camp) 3,210 m (Poon Hill)
Difficulty Moderate to demanding Easy to moderate
Main highlight Annapurna Base Camp and close-up mountain views Poon Hill sunrise and panoramic mountain views
Landscape Alpine valleys, glaciers, moraines, and towering peaks Rhododendron forests, villages, and rolling mountain landscapes
Altitude concern Higher altitude and faster ascent Lower altitude and slower ascent
Cultural experience Gurung and Magar villages along the route Stronger focus on traditional villages and local culture

In short, choose Short ABC if reaching a high-altitude base camp is the dream. Choose Poon Hill if you want a shorter, easier trek with beautiful mountain views and more time to enjoy the journey.

I had an extremely memorable Annapurna Circuit trek with Simbir. It was my first time doing a multi-day trek and he made sure that the group was taken care of well, ensuring we were paced and caught all the good view points! He would stop to share the names of the mountains and stories about the local people. It was such a great experience, I reached out again to Simbir 6 years later to do the Annapurna base camp trek and it was equally memorable. We had a shortened itinerary but Simbir’s positive attitude and pacing every day made things really fun along the entire trek. I’d definitely return to Actionnepaltreks for any future treks I plan in Nep. 10/10 recommend this company!

This hike was a little out of my comfort zone and he did the best job of making me feel strong and confident. I felt well informed of how each day would go, and he was easily approachable to ask questions or talk. His energy and positive attitude are contagious, and the dance parties made even the hardest days fun. You can tell he genuinely cares for everyone on the trek, including the other guides and porters. I can't imagine a better guide, and would 100% book with Simbir again

Touched the Base of Annapurna in Just 5 Days

The short Annapurna Base Camp trek was amazing and a lot of fun. We did 5 day’s trek due to my busy schedule. The short days were really a hassle, but the Action Nepal Trek team made everything easy to manage. Our professional guide accompanied us throughout the route, ensuring our safety and navigation. Our porter carried all our backpacks, letting us walk freely on the fast-paced trek. Even in a short duration, we can proudly say that we touched the ground of Annapurna and witnessed Mount Annapurna at its closest. This was our first trek with Action Nepal Treks, and we will use the same company for our future visits to Nepal. Highly recommend.
