Short Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary

The first day of the trek starts in the morning with a drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. The scenic drive will take us around 3 hours, covering approximately 138 km. We will pass through rural landscapes and small villages. After reaching Ramechhap, we will board a 20-minute flight to Lukla. The flight to Lukla offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, preparing us for the adventure ahead.

Once we land at Lukla, our trek begins. We will follow a relatively easy trail through pine forests, passing by Sherpa villages such as Chaurikharka and Thado Koshi. The walk will take about 3 hours, and we will stop along the way for breakfast or tea at local tea houses. We will arrive in Phakding by late afternoon, where we will settle into our lodge and relax after the first day of trekking.

On the second day, we will start the day by trekking along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges. The trail will pass through villages like Tok Tok and Benkar before we arrive at Monjo, where we will enter Sagarmatha National Park. After having our permits checked, we will continue along the trail, which becomes steeper as we ascend.

Along the way, we will stop for breakfast and take breaks to enjoy the spectacular scenery. The final push to Namche Bazaar is a challenging uphill climb, but the stunning views of Everest and Lhotse will make it all worthwhile. After 6 to 7 hours of trekking, we will arrive at Namche Bazaar. It is the gateway to the Everest region.

After breakfast, we will depart from Namche Bazaar and climb gradually. We will enjoy panoramic views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks in today’s journey. The trail is a mix of ascents and level paths, taking us through the small village of Kyangjuma before reaching Tengboche. Here, we will stop for lunch and visit the Tengboche Monastery.

After having a short lunch break, we will resume our journey. Descending through rhododendron forests, we will cross the Imja Khola River before beginning a gradual ascent to Pangboche. The village, home to many Sherpa climbers, offers stunning views of Ama Dablam.

We will continue our trek with a steady ascent, leaving behind the tree line as we enter the alpine meadows. Along the way, we will pass through Dingboche, a small settlement, where we will stop for lunch. As we gain altitude, the terrain will become more barren and rocky, with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

The climb becomes steeper as we approach Thukla, and the higher altitude will start to make the trek more challenging. After walking for a long day, we will reach Thukla at about 5 o’clock. We will have dinner and take a rest while preparing for tomorrows journey.

This will be one of the most exciting days of our trek. We will leave Thukla and climb a steep trail that passes memorials dedicated to climbers who lost their lives on Everest. The rocky path will require some effort, but the views of the surrounding peaks will motivate us along the way.

After reaching Gorakshep, we will take a brief rest before heading to Everest Base Camp (5364m). The trek to base camp will take us across rocky terrain. Reaching base camp will be a significant achievement, and we will take time to explore the area, marveling at the views of the Khumbu Icefall. Afterward, we will return to Gorakshep for the night.

Today, we will reach the highest point of the overall journey. We will rise early to begin our trek to Kala Patthar. It is a viewpoint that offers the best panoramic views of Everest. The steep climb will be challenging, but the sunrise over Everest and the surrounding peaks will be unforgettable.

After enjoying the views, we will descend to Gorakshep for breakfast and continue our trek down to Pheriche. The descent will be easier, and the lower altitude will make the walk more comfortable. Pheriche is a small village in the Khumbu region.

Beginning our descending journey, we will descend from Pheriche, retracing our steps back to Namche Bazaar. On our final day of trekking, we will descend from Namche Bazaar to Lukla. The path will take us along the Dudh Koshi River once again, passing through familiar villages. The trek will be mostly downhill, though there are a few short ascents along the way.

After 7 hours of trekking, we will reach Lukla, where we will celebrate the successful completion of our trek. We will spend our last night in the mountains at a lodge in Lukla, reflecting on our journey and the unforgettable experiences of the past week.

On our final day, we will take a morning flight from Lukla back to Ramechhap. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, we will have the rest of the day to relax or explore the city. This will be the perfect opportunity to visit some of Kathmandu’s cultural sites, shop for souvenirs, or simply unwind after our trek.

Location, Distance, and Altitude Of Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp Trek is located in the Khumbu Region of Nepal. It is popularly known as the base of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Located south of the Everest peak, the place is the starting point for climbers climbing towards this highest mountain. Also, this trek passes within the Sagarmatha National Park, giving you the opportunity to witness the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The starting and ending points of the trek is a small town called Lukla.

The flying distance from Kathmandu to Lukla is about 138 kilometers. To reach EBC from Kathmandu, you need to cover 154 kilometers flying. The total breakdown of the distance is mentioned below in brief:

Everest Base Camp is situated at an altitude of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) above sea level. Trekking here, you will make your way through high-altitude places. One of the high passes is Kala Patthar, located at 5,644 meters. With altitudes of over 5,000 meters, the chances of getting altitude sickness are also high. Thus, to complete the EBC trek, it is essential for you to properly acclimate to your itinerary.

Trek Route to Short Everest Base Camp

The Everest Base Camp journey starts from Lukla. It is a small airport town that we will reach by a short 20-minute flight from Ramechhap. From there, our trekking journey starts. The first stop we will make is Phakding. Moving forward and making our way through dense pine forests alongside the Dudh Khosi River, we will make our way through many traditional Sherpa settlements.

On this journey, we will see the views of some of the peaks, such as Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. Finally, we will reach Namche Bazaar, the major and bustling city of your entire trek. Continuing our journey, we will trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery, where we can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views of Ama Dablam.

As we progress, we pass through Dingboche and Lobuche, where the landscape becomes more rugged and the air thinner. Finally, we will reach Gorakshep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. From Gorakshep, we take a day hike to EBC, where we will witness the awe-inspiring sight of the Khumbu Icefall and the towering Mount Everest itself, marking the culmination of our incredible trek.

The Lukla Flight for Short EBC Trek

Lukla Airport, aka Tenzing Hilarry Airport, falls under the list of one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Located at an altitude of 2,840 meters, this airport serves as the entry and exit point of Everest Region. According to the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority, recently, the direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla has been halted, and the alternative Ramechapph is used for flying flights towards Lukla. A brief description of both:

Lukla flight from Kathmandu airport

In the past, flying from Kathmandu to Lukla was the most convenient option for trekkers heading to the Everest region. The flight would take around 30 to 35 minutes, offering stunning views of the Himalayas as you approach Lukla. These flights were especially common in off-peak months like January, February, June, July, and December. However, the small runway at Lukla and unpredictable weather often caused delays and cancellations.

Now, direct flights from Kathmandu are no longer available unless the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) gives special permission. Due to Kathmandu airport overcrowding and other challenges, all Lukla flights have been rerouted to Ramechhap. You must now look for alternative routes, as flying directly from Kathmandu is rarely possible.

The majority of flights to Lukla now depart from Ramechhap Airport, which is about 138 km from Kathmandu. To catch the flight, you will first need to take a 3-hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. Though the drive adds time to your journey, it helps avoid the heavy air traffic in Kathmandu. Once at Ramechhap, the flight to Lukla is shorter, lasting only 20 minutes, and you will see spectacular views of the Himalayas.

Flying from Ramechhap has become the preferred option for most travelers, especially during peak trekking seasons. It reduces the chances of flight delays caused by traffic in Kathmandu, and the smaller Ramechhap airport operates more smoothly, ensuring a better travel experience despite the extra drive.

Popular Landmarks in Short EBC Trek

Everest Region has become the most popular trekking destination among trekkers in Nepal, and it is very popular with Everest Base Camp. Also, following the same route toward the summit of the highest mountain, you will see several popular landmarks you can witness during the adventure. Some of them are:

Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters / 17,598 feet)

Everest Base Camp is the ultimate destination for your trek, sitting at the foot of Mount Everest. It is the beginning point for climbers to move up to the summit of the highest peak in the world. To stay hydrated, you should bring water purification tablets to treat tap water or purchase bottled water along the way.

WIFI & Communication Service During Short EBC Trek

Wi-Fi and communication services are available on the Everest Base Camp trek. However, they become less reliable at higher altitudes. In villages like Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Dingboche, many teahouses offer Wi-Fi for an additional fee, typically around USD 2-5 per hour. However, the connection can be slow and may not work consistently.

As you get closer to Everest Base Camp, places like Lobuche and Gorakshep also offer Wi-Fi, but the signal tends to be weaker. For phone communication, you can use local SIM cards (Nepal Telecom or Ncell), which provide service in most areas of the trek. You may experience network coverage issues as you go higher. Thus, it is best to inform family and friends about possible communication delays before you start the trek.

Acute Mountain Sickness And Remedies

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common challenge you can face due to the high altitude during the EBC trek. You can feel the symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue, typically appearing at altitudes above 2,500 meters. To prevent AMS, it is essential to ascend gradually, allowing your body to acclimatize to the thin air. You should follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle, meaning you can ascend higher during the day but descend to sleep at a lower altitude.

Remedies

Increase altitude slowly to allow your body time to acclimatize.
Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the altitude.
Add acclimatization days in your trek to give your body time to adapt.
Avoid alcohol and smoking as it can worsen the effects of altitude sickness.
The use of Diamox (acetazolamide) can help prevent and reduce AMS symptoms (consult with your doctor before taking it).
If AMS symptoms persist or become severe, descend to a lower altitude immediately.

However, solo trekkers must be well-prepared, as the high altitude and unpredictable weather can be challenging. Whether you choose to trek with a guide or go solo depends on your experience level, confidence, and desire for support versus independence.

Preparation for Short Everest Base Camp Trek
