Overview of Tsum Valley Trek

The 17-day Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek offers you an extraordinary experience in the remote region of Nepal. Located in Gorkha District in north-central Nepal, with this adventure, you can witness the untouched beauty of Tsum Valley. Nested between Ganesh Himalayas and Sringi Himal, upon reaching here you will be welcomed by the beautiful Himalayas as a backdrop. The trek covers a total distance of 170 kilometers (105 miles), starting from Soti Khola and reaching a maximum of around 5,160 meters at the Larkya La Pass.

With this adventure, you will make your way through dense forests, suspension bridges, terrace fields, and charming remote villages. This trek offers stunning views of towering peaks like Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth-highest mountain in the world, along with other surrounding giants. The Tsum Valley, also known as the ‘Hidden Valley’, has been largely isolated from modernization. This place allows you to experience ancient Buddhist traditions, sacred monasteries, and friendly encounters with locals.

Accommodation is available in basic tea houses, and you will find meals with hearty local dishes like dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice) to keep you energized. With its remote trails, fewer trekkers, and remarkable cultural encounters, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is ideal if you seek both adventure and deep cultural immersion. The trek does require a moderate to high level of fitness.

Why Tsum Valley Trek Via Manaslu Circuit Over Other Treks?

Unique Cultural Experience

Trekking through Tsum Valley on the Manaslu Circuit allows you to fully experience Tibetan Buddhist culture. Such cultural richness is not found anywhere else in the region. You will pass by ancient monasteries, colorful prayer flags, and sacred mani walls engraved with Buddhist mantras.

These sights add to the spiritual ambiance of the trail. This is a very rare trek to come in contact with the natives called Tsumbas, who belong to traditional Tibetan customs. In their daily activities and peaceful lifestyles, you get the opportunity to see an ancient culture. This culture remains largely untouched by the outside world.

Stunning Natural Beauty

The Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek offer some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Himalayas. You will make your way through lush forests, terraced farmlands, and rugged mountain passes. En route, you will catch glimpses of breathtaking views of towering peaks such as Manaslu and Ganesh Himal.

The scenery will keep on changing from the green valleys to the snow-filled mountains. This variety makes each day fresh and memorable. This diversity in landscapes makes the journey not just a trek but an awe-inspiring experience of nature’s grandeur.

Less Crowded Trail

Unlike the busy trails of Annapurna and Everest, the Manaslu and Tsum Valley trek remains one of Nepal’s quieter routes. With fewer tourists, you can enjoy a peaceful and more personal experience in nature.

This quieter environment allows you to immerse yourself in the serene surroundings. You will enjoy the tranquility of villages and landscapes falling along the way. Therefore, this makes it apt for solitude-seekers in the mountains.

Challenging Adventure with Rewarding Views

The Manaslu and Tsum Valley trek offers a thrilling adventure. One of the highlights is tackling the high-altitude Larkya La Pass. This crossing is physically challenging and requires good preparation.

But the panoramic views of snow-covered peaks from the top are incredibly rewarding. Each day of the trek presents a new challenge. You will either face steep ascents or high altitude, or rugged trails. Finishing the trek gives you a great sense of accomplishment.

Manaslu and Tsum Valley Trek Route

Our Manaslu and Tsum Valley Trek itinerary starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. Starting the trek from there, we will hike through bamboo forests and along the Budhi Gandaki River, following trails that wind through forested slopes and traditional villages. We will make an upward trek to Lokpa via Jagat, passing through beautiful rhododendrons and pine forests. From there, we will veer off the main Manaslu path to enter the secluded Tsum Valley, known for its rich Tibetan culture and customs.

In Tsum Valley, traditional monasteries, lines of mani walls, and colored prayer flags add to the tranquil and spiritual atmosphere. We will stay in the villages of Sama Gaun and Samdo to acclimate, as we will be trekking at high altitudes. From Sama Gaun, we will have the opportunity to trek to Manaslu Base Camp. Moving onward from Samdo, we will gear up to cross the challenging Larkya La Pass. Though technical skills aren’t required, this day will be physically demanding and rewarding with its panoramic views.

Our trail also makes stops at Gumba Lungdang, Mu Gompa, Pungen Gompa, and the Rui La Pass, close to the Tibetan border. Each site offers unique glimpses into local culture and provides sweeping views of snow-capped peaks. We will then cross the Larkya La Pass and then descend down to Dharapani, where the trek will end. From Dharapani, we can choose to return to Kathmandu or continue to Pokhara, bringing our adventure to a close with unforgettable memories of stunning natural beauty and vibrant cultural experiences.

Lodges In Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

Lodges along the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek provide simple, comfortable accommodations. Most lodges offer cozy rooms, communal dining areas, and limited yet sufficient facilities for a restful stay. In lower regions, the lodges are relatively well-equipped, and you will often find a range of Nepali meals available. However, as you ascend, the lodges become more basic, focusing on essentials. Rooms are typically twin-shared with limited electricity, and hot showers are available at a small additional cost in many places.

Tea houses/lodges in the Tsum Valley region often reflect local Tibetan culture. Staying here, you will get a glimpse of unique insight into the area’s traditional way of life. The welcoming nature of the locals makes each stay memorable despite the modest facilities. Although some lodges may lack modern amenities, they provide warmth and hospitality. During your stay here, you will have an opportunity to have an authentic trekking experience.

Variety of Dining Options You Get

During your trek towards Manaslu Tsum Valley trek, you will get options for local and international cuisine. The most common stable dishes you will get include rice, lentil soup, pulses, vegetables, and spinach. These dishes are mostly made available by teahouses. However, as you ascend beyond 4,000 meters, the menu options become more limited. Offering a mix of traditional, Asian, and Western flavors, the dishes you get here are mostly fresh, hygenic, and nutritious.

Breakfast: Oatmeal, cornflakes, French toast with jam, butter, and cheese, as well as Tibetan bread, chapati, local Tsampa porridge, eggs, pancakes, muesli, fruits, vegetables, and hot drinks.

Lunch: Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, soups, Sherpa stew, steaks, sandwiches, momos, pasta dishes, vegetable curries, salads, and sometimes pizza.

Dinners: Similar to Lunch, with hearty options like Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, Sherpa stew, noodles, thukpa, and Korean ramen, among others.

We recommend you take in plenty of liquids at higher altitudes, such as green tea, lemon tea, ginger tea, and especially garlic soup, as it aids during altitude sickness. Although you will get an option for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, we advise you not to consider the veggies one for hygiene regions. Furthermore, you should avoid dairy, alcohol, caffeinated items, and hot chocolate, as these can have adverse effects at high altitudes.

Availability of Drinking Water, Electricity, And Wi-FI

During the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will find drinking water available at most villages and tea houses along the way. However, it is essential to treat or filter it to ensure safety. Many teahouses sell bottled water, but it is expensive due to the remoteness. Thus, we recommend you carry a reusable water bottle and use purification tablets or a portable water filter. This will help you stay hydrated without adding unnecessary waste.

Electricity is available in most villages on both the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit routes, but it can be limited, especially as you climb higher into more isolated areas. Most teahouses offer charging facilities, though you will likely have to pay a small fee per device. You can bring a portable power bank. This ensures you have enough charge for your camera, phone, or any other essential device.

Similarly, Wi-Fi access on the routes is limited, with fewer options compared to more popular treks in Nepal, like the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp. In some villages, teahouses offer Wi-Fi for a fee, but the connection is often slow. If you need to stay connected, you can consider purchasing a Nepali SIM card with a data plan. However, be prepared as the coverage can still be inconsistent in remote areas.

17 Days Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek Difficulty

The Tsum Valley via Manaslu trek is considered to be a challenging adventure in Manaslu Region. It is graded to be 4 out of 5 in terms of difficulty level. There are several factors increasing the challenges of this adventure. The major difficulty is that the trek merges two different destinations, Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit. Want to find out what challenges you can encounter? Let’s delve into a little more.

Long Hiking Days

As the trek involves around three weeks, it can be quite difficult for you to complete. Also, you have to hike for about 5 to 6 hours daily on average in the rugged terrain and uphill and downhill sections. It cannot be a cup of tea for everyone as the trek is physically demanding, and you may need good stamina and endurance to complete it.

High Altitude Climb

This trek involves significant altitude gain, with sections reaching above 5,000 meters (approximately 16,404 feet). The risk of altitude sickness increases at higher elevations, so acclimatization is crucial. Consider ascending gradually and staying hydrated to help your body adjust more effectively to the altitude.

Limited Facilities

As you trek through remote areas, facilities such as lodging and food can be limited. Guesthouses may have basic amenities, and access to hot showers or electricity can be inconsistent. Bringing snacks and a few comfort items from home can make your stay more enjoyable during the more remote stretches.

Unpredictable Weather

The weather in the Himalayas can change rapidly, with the potential for rain, snow, or intense sun. Proper gear and layers are essential to adapt to varying conditions. Checking weather forecasts regularly and being ready to adjust your plans can help you stay safe and comfortable.

Physical Requirements

A good level of fitness is necessary. Training ahead of time can help build your endurance and prepare you for the physical challenges of the trek. Incorporating hikes with a weighted backpack into your training can simulate the trekking experience and enhance your strength and stamina.

Altitude Sickness And Ways To Prevent It

Altitude sickness is most common in higher altitudes. But you may be wondering what altitude sickness is. It is a serious health issue you can encounter due to rapid climbing in higher altitudes, as your body doesn’t get enough air pressure. Some of its symptoms include shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Sometimes altitude sickness can also be life-threatening, with some serious situations like HAPE and HACE.

Here are some simple ways you can do to protect yourself from this altitude sickness:

  • You should ascend slowly to allow your body to adjust to higher elevations, increasing your altitude in small increments.
  • Drink plenty of water (3 to 4 liters) to stay hydrated, as dehydration can worsen symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • You should avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can be the primary cause of dehydration in higher altitudes.
  • Consuming smaller, high-carbohydrate meals will help your body utilize oxygen more efficiently.
  • Pay attention to symptoms like headaches, nausea, or dizziness, and if you feel unwell, consider descending to a lower altitude.
  • Ensure you get adequate rest and sleep to help your body recover and acclimatize better.

Solo Or Guided Trek?

Wondering whether to choose a solo trek or have a group/ guided one? As the Tsum Valley trek passes through the restricted area of Nepal, you are not allowed to make a solo trek there. If you are solo trekking to this region, it is compulsory for you to hire a guide. However, if you are a group of two, a guide is not mandatory, but it is generally recommended. Preparation For Tsum Valley via Manaslu Circuit Trek

Considered to be a challenging adventure in the Manaslu Region, it is essential for you to make proper preparations if you are trekking here. To make yourself ready for the journey, you can focus mainly on three sections, i.e., preparing yourself physically for the difficult section, getting mentally ready for the remoteness of the area and limited facilities, and making a proper packing list for comfort. Let’s discuss each, and let’s get prepared for the upcoming journey.

Physical Preparation

Trekking to rugged terrain along with continuous uphill and downhill climbs, you need some good stamina. You should do regular cardiovascular exercises such as running, swimming, and cycling to build your stamina. Make sure you indulge in these activities prior to 3 to 4 months of your journey. Besides that, we also recommend you opt for short hiking. This helps you adjust to high-altitude trekking in the Himalayas. Similarly, having strength and some level of flexibility and balance are also equally important. Thus, include squats, planks, stretching, and yoga in your training.

Mental Preparation

Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation. This section of the trek is quite challenging due to the remoteness. Thus, getting a good level of facilities here is not possible. For all these, you should have a proper mental readiness. Similarly, to tackle the physical demands of the trek, having a peaceful and stable mind is also equally important. To do this, you can try meditation and yoga. Also, you can think about the real situation in your mind and your upcoming accomplishments. This helps to make your adventure successful.

Similarly, your insurance also covers baggage lost trek cancellation and even provides you with emergency help during the time of need.
