Is Tsum Valley Trek Suitable For You?
The Tsum Valley Trek is a good choice if you enjoy quiet places, natural beauty, and exploring unique cultures. This trek is a bit challenging, so having some trekking experience and a good fitness level can help. You will need to walk for about 5 to 7 hours a day, with some steep trails and high altitudes. If you are comfortable with long hikes and mountain trails, you will enjoy this beautiful and peaceful valley.
Tsum Valley is known for its rich culture and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. You will pass through villages where people still follow old customs, and you can visit ancient monasteries and sacred sites. It is a quiet area, so there are fewer people on the trails, and the accommodations are simple. If you like peaceful, off-the-beaten-path places and are okay with basic facilities, Tsum Valley could be a perfect trek for you.
Lodges During The Tsum Valley Trek
In Kathmandu, you will stay at 3-star hotels with a bed-and-breakfast arrangement. During the trek, accommodations will be in twin rooms, and you can opt for a single room for an additional fee. At lower elevations, lodges, and tea houses often have rooms with attached bathrooms, but at higher elevations, these may be harder to find. Rooms are usually shared, and facilities are basic.
Lodges along the Tsum Valley Trek offer bed-and-breakfast services similar to hotels, with comfortable twin beds, foam pads, pillows, and blankets. For extra warmth, it is recommended to bring your own sleeping bag. While accommodations at lower elevations are generally better, the quality tends to be simpler at higher altitudes, with only the basic amenities provided.
Meals You Get In The Journey
During this 11-day Tsum Valley trek, you will have nutritious meals to energize you. The food options become more limited and expensive as you go higher, but we ensure you receive enough meals. Each day, you will have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with local, Asian, and Western dishes available. It is best to focus on fresh vegetables and drinks like lemon tea, green tea, ginger tea, and garlic soup to help with high-altitude conditions. We generally recommend you not try out non-vegetarian items due to hygiene concerns. Furthermore, limiting dairy, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol can be beneficial.
Here is the menu for each meal:
Meal | Options |
Breakfast | Muesli, Bread, Fruits, Oatmeal, Corn Flakes, French Toast with Jam, Butter, Cheese, Honey, Tibetan Bread, Chapati, Tsampa Porridge, Eggs, Pancakes, Hot Drinks (Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate) |

Wi-Fi & Internet Connectivity
Wi-Fi and internet connectivity during the trek can be limited, especially as you ascend to higher elevations. In the lower regions, you may find Wi-Fi services in lodges and tea houses, but these are often slow, expensive, and unreliable. While they may work well for simple tasks like checking emails, they might not be sufficient for video calls or heavy internet usage. As you move to higher altitudes, internet connectivity becomes much more scarce, and Wi-Fi is generally unavailable.
Some lodges might offer paid internet services, but these connections are often weak, intermittent, and can be costly. For better communication, it is advisable to purchase a local SIM card with data; however, coverage is limited to lower altitudes, and you may not get a signal in remote areas. For peace of mind, it is a good idea to inform your family and friends about the limited connectivity before the trek so they are aware of potential communication delays.
Trek Difficulty
The Tsum Valley Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek. It is mainly due to its remote location, high altitudes, and rugged trails. Trekkers should be prepared for long walking days, usually between 5 to 7 hours, on steep and uneven paths. There are several ups and downs on the trail that demand good physical fitness and stamina. Prior trekking experience is helpful, though not essential, as long as you are physically prepared.
Altitude is another factor that adds difficulty to the trek, as some parts reach over 3,000 meters. This means you will need to take it slow and allow time to acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness. Additionally, the Tsum Valley is a less-developed region, so accommodations are basic, and the trek is more remote than popular routes like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna. This isolation means you should not be very particular about amenities and be prepared for an adventurous, off-the-beaten-path experience.
Travel Insurance during Tsum Valley Trek
Travel insurance for the Tsum Valley Trek covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation costs, and other emergency costs. Since the trek takes place in a remote area with limited medical facilities, travel insurance ensures you are covered in case of illness, injury, or the need for evacuation. It will also protect you in the event of trip cancellations due to unforeseen illness or injury.
Besides, Tsum Valley is a natural disaster-prone area: landslides, avalanches, and so on. Travel insurance may cover your evacuation expenses in such cases. It also protects against the loss or theft of your equipment during the trek. It is important to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical care, evacuation, and other expenses and to keep a copy of your policy and contact details with you for easy access during the trek.

What is the Best Time for the Tsum Valley Trek?
Spring
March to May
Spring is one of the best times to trek in Tsum Valley. The weather is usually mild, and temperatures are warm; hence, it is comfortable for trekking. Rhododendron forests burst into vibrant colors, painting the trails with shades of pink, red, and white, creating a beautiful backdrop. Skies are usually clear, thus providing unobstructed views of the Himalayan peaks. This season sees a moderate number of trekkers, providing a balance between scenic beauty and serenity.
Summer/Monsoon
June to August
The summer months coincide with the monsoon season, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. Because of this factor, the trail turns slippery and muddy, and at the same time, landslides might occur. It is quite an unfavorable time for trekking, yet it is a point in time when valley greenery reaches its peak. If you don’t mind the rain, trekking during this season offers solitude and an intimate connection with the valley’s natural beauty, but it requires careful planning.
Autumn
September to November
Autumn is the most popular season for trekking in Tsum Valley. The weather is stable, with warm days and cool nights. The monsoon has washed away dust, leaving the trails clean and the air clear. Views of mountains like Ganesh Himal are spectacular under the crisp autumn skies. This season attracts the most trekkers, so trails and teahouses may be busier, but the stunning landscapes and favorable conditions make it worthwhile.
Winter
December to February
Winter trekking in Tsum Valley is possible but can be challenging due to cold temperatures and snowfall at higher altitudes. The valley sees few trekkers, so it is an ideal time for solitude. However, some areas may become inaccessible due to snow, especially high passes. If you are prepared for the cold and equipped with proper winter gear, you can enjoy the quiet beauty of the valley, with snow-capped landscapes and a sense of tranquility unmatched in other seasons.
Dates & Prices
Our fixed departure dates and per-person pricing make it simple for both solo travelers and small groups to join the adventure. It’s a great chance to meet new people and share the experience with other trekkers. Just choose your preferred date, and we’ll take care of the rest.
